Bute in the food chain & useless passportation

I phoned the vet yesterday to request more danilon only to be told they had to see the passport and the 'human consumption' bit before I could get anymore. DEFRA are issuing fines to vets who prescribe bute without double checking the passport so cue a long drive to the vets today:rolleyes:

Not entirely sure how it's going to make a huge difference. It's obviously going wrong further along the chain and not just the vets prescription of bute.

I suspect the people who are happy becasue they don't eat beef should just hang on a little, if this is so easy to do why wouldn't they do it for other similar meats, lamb in mossaka, sheppards pie etc.

Not sure what you'd use for cheap chicken (pigeon? someone mentioned eel on another web site but no idea if that could be true!), but I'm sure someone wanting to make a fast buck could think of something gross !

erm, I don't think eel would be a cheaper alternative than chicken...maybe pigeon! Lord knows there's enough of them about - and probably easy to get at as well.

But i agree that there will be other things popping up in our ready meals.

That will be the other knock on effect....the days of Bute being freely available from vets to have a stock at home for minor injuries may be over now.
Over the last few years there have been rumbling from europe of it being banned its use in horses anyway... for fear it enter the food chain...so I really hope that this will not be the final nail in the coffin for the drug.

Even though it is a drug with side effects and is occasionally overused/misused it is one of the essentials in equine practice and if bute and danilion(as it is of the same base drug)go off market the costs of keeping the likes of older arthritic horses comfortable will go up quite a lot :(

Cheap chicken comes from Thailand, just check out the origin on practically every chicken ready meal or pizza in Tesco. It begs the question, how can it be cheaper to transport it half way around the world than source in within this country? What sort of disgusting conditions are these birds raised in, remembering that countries in that part of the world are usually always at the source of avian flu epidemics. How can anyone be re-assured that this meat is safe to eat when then can't even control it when it's produced inside the EU.

There really only is one way to ensure that you know where your meat has come from and what you are eating, and that is by shopping locally from the highstreet butcher and farm shops, and boycotting the supermarkets. For too long, they have put profit first, and in doing so, have put pressure on their suppliers to source ever cheaper ingredients. They have had their time I believe, and more and more people are deserting them to shop locally, at markets, butchers, and farm shops.

I don't eat beef (or lamb etc for that matter) but do eat poulty and pork. It's worrying what might be in other products. Shan't be eating sausages or anything processed (not that I do very often) until they investigate properly! I usually eat quorn mince but what's to say it hasn't got into that  Off to hunt for a local butchers.....

I'm not sure why British beef farmers are worried about loss of business? It's not them that's under scruitiny, and in fact I would think that there will perhaps be a shift on to more locally produced beef rather than sourced abroad?

All this news should be good news for those farmers in the UK - I would hope so. But if someone would enlighten me how it will negatively impact British farmers, I'm all ears :)

I have to agree - while I definately won't be buying any processed meat products (didn't really before anyway) it won't affect me buying cuts of british meat from a butcher. I almost wonder if it will put up sales of 'real' meat as it's pretty obvious what it is rather than processed c**p
