Bute question:

My vet will give me a box of 60 sachets at a time and checks my mare every six months for any signs of compromised liver etc.

She has only been on one bute as and when needed, including before being ridden. However, as the chilly, damp mornings have arrived she is not good and I've taken the decision to retire her. She is only 14.3hh so I'm not sure I can justify 2 sachets before riding. It's a tough call though as she's had a really good summer with lots of hacking without any issues.

I'm calling the vet this morning to see if 2 sachets a day (morning/evening) is appropriate now.

Just a quick one about the bute from India, it might get seized at customs as its illegal to import. Also it’s probably not real bute... it’s likely counterfeit hence why it’s cheaper and there’s no guarantee it’s what it says on the label or not contaminated.

yup it's coated in sugar so that tends to help though I've never known anything not eat bute, even old fusspot here!

We had to syringe one sachet per day into our old Appaloosa mare (500kg). She would only take it mixed with hot chocolate or custard powder. It did make her tired after a while and she needed a break for a week or so. This was to keep her in light work and then field sound. She was on it for several years under 2 different vet practices.
