Hi everyone

Looking for some advice

At the start of the year vet recommended for my 25 year old welsh cob to go onto a painkiller as he had mild arthritis and was getting quite stiff .. she advised Equioxx and he was better .. she said to see how he got on over the summer and if he seemed better due to more turnout we could just treat as and when but he would probably be on it for winter as he’s in abit more

He’s had a lovely summer though limited work due to copd flair ups and has had his shoes removed again due to being semi retired so he was foot sore for a couple of weeks but now looking a lot better but hasn’t shown signs of stiffness

I’m now planning for the dreaded w word and Iv looked into the equioxx .. i don’t like to deny him of the best I can offer but with a possibility of becoming a home owner and other things I just am struggling at the price . Iv looked into bute which is what my old pony had for years and the vet did say he probably won’t be around for when any effect on his organs shows.

Is there a huge risk of going onto bute I know the equioxx is better on their digestion but Iv had lots of blood tests and he’s actually very healthy for his age so I’m wondering if Bute would be ok .. I will obviously speak to my vet but was hoping for some opinions or if anyone else has been in the same situation

Thanks

I know of plenty of horses that have been on a sachet of bute for years, so it wouldn't worry me. Mine is on Danilon as she won't eat bute and has been for around 18 months (half a sachet).

Do also look at getting a prescription and buying online, or ask your vets if they can price match, as a lot will do.

Mine has been on 1 sachet of bute for a few years for his hock arthritis. He's 18 now and have no qualms about it. He doesn't jump or do anything ridiculous anymore, even if he wanted to (well, apart from the antics in the field on his own accord)
