I'm only asking as thinking it would be a good idea to get some 'just in case'. A couple of people at my yard have it in their kit in case it's required and I think it's a good idea. I may never need it but you never know...

Thanks peeps :)

I think they are much less likely to give it these days...... I managed to get a few off my vet when he was on a routine visit (think about 5) with strict instructions on not to use it if I thought I was going to have to call him. I know my vets quite well having done a lot of work experience with then in the past so they kind of know what I know if you see what I mean.

I would guess they would err on the side of no and they would rather see/speak about the issue when it arises rather than have owners whose knowledge base they don't know self medicating which I think is right anyway.

fwiw having had our horses for 6 and 5 years respectively they have each had bute prescribed once and I have only given it non prescribed once when I guessed it was a previous muscle issue recurring and 2 days later was fine.

I don't know if your vet would let you ahve any without a 'reason' as such. My vets (and we've used them for 20 years) wouldn't I don't think. But, as Tom is prescribed it at a very dose (half every other day for Sidebone) and we don't use as much as he's prescribed most of the year we do tend to have some in stock. Having said that, I've only once given Ron any bute in 6 years, and I only gave him one sachet so it wouldn't really have bothered me if I hadn't had any!

Thanks guys. He's only needed it once when he was gelded and was on it for a couple of weeks. I just thought it might be a good thing to have, just in case, though I'd get advice as to whether I should use it if anything was to happen. I've got to give them a call anyway to check some insurance stuff so I'll see what they say about the bute :)
