My boy is on 1 bute a day so a small dose for arthritus he has top spec senior for his joints he won't touch any of the other substitute bute products will this small amount of bute affect him long term, thanks.

It may but then again it may not. If its making him comfortable and he won't touch anything else surely its better to have him on bute rather than in discomfort.

So is mare aged 21, it keeps her that bit more flexible & happy and at her age the long term effects do not matter as much, her quality of life at this point is more important (she's on danilon, much more palitable for the fussy eaters!)

Possibly eventually but I'd say at that dose you're looking at a while down the line (and depending on his age something else may well come along well before that point or his arthritis may deteriorate) and if it is improving his quality of life right now then I'd say he's better off on the small dose of bute that may or may not slightly shorten his life than being miserable without it.

Thank you for all your replys I phoned the vet to ask if Bute was the only solution and she said its the best for my boy we will ween him down to one every other day and its the best for my boy thanks.

Are you sure it is arthritis that is causing the pain? How old is he? What work has he done in his life?

He's hunted twice a week since he was 5 now he's 14 but he has been well looked after and both my physio and vet say its time to give him bute so he will last till at least 20 ish he gets very stiff so he is out 24/7 in a old turf sheltered field coming in day before hunting to have a lay down and his magnetic rug on he loves this but then he loves his field as well so he gets the best of both worlds when he's out in the field over night he gets magnet boots on. he's fed top spec senior, and is seen by the McTimoney every 3 months, so I do feel he is getting the best and I trust my vet who is a very good old vet who do's a lot in the racing world. Thanks for your comments have you had a bad experience with your horse !!

A little bit of bute should be ok - if vet is happy then that's important thing. "No Bute" with Devil's Claw has been excellent for my horse in past, as prefer "natural" products.

Maybe worth trying a therapy to help with pain relief - a qualified Equine Bowen Therapist or Massage therapist or Physiotherapist could make a big difference to comfort. :)
