I have recently been schooling George in a pelham as a bit of an experiment and he has been a total joy to ride :) and instead of me worrying about what his head is doing I have been concentrating on working him from behind with my leg and seat. I really struggle to do this when he is in a snaffle and he is all stiff in front and I wrongly end up concentrating on his front end instead of the engine - mostly as a result of my mediocre riding but there you go!

The thing is I don't think he needs a bit as strong as full pelham and I wondered if anyone had used a butterfly pelham like this:

Firstly what did you think of it and secondly is it meant to be used with 2 reins like a pelham or just one?

Thanks :)

i wouldn't bother buying a new butterfly pelham- but just use two reins- that way you only use the curb when you need to and ride on the snaffle rein the rest of the time.

i actually believe that a pelham with a long shank is milder than a short one... the reason being that to exert the full force with a longer shank means one hell of a pull on the rein, where as with a shorter shank you are exerting the full force with less pressure. hope that makes sense?
