My neice rode my 6yo mare today, she hasnt been broken in that long and is quite green, but very honest. Both times when troting she has thrown in what looks like one stride of canter, or a prance! then carries on trotting. My neice says she isnt being strong, her ears are forward all the time, she isnt trying to unseat her, she looks really happy and well as if she enjoys being ridden, saddle professionally fitted, back fine, any ideas???

My pony does that. He's been broken a year or so but before that was a carriage pony (mental trotter!). His trot is all over the place when he gets excited and he often throws a canter stride or two in.
I would just say that it's because she's quite green, she'll get over it!

i'd think it is just greeness and being unbalanced.

she may need to slow down a little in her trot until her balance and rythym is a little better.

Frankie does a similar sounding little jump into trot every now and again, usually when he is fresh!

He does it more often when driven, too?

These days I put it down to freshness, although he is built front-heavy, so I think when unbalanced and on his forehand he used it as a way of levering himself up into trot - does this sound like what she is trying to do?
