I am in the market for a cheap horse (under £1000) Have seen a few, but in no hurry to buy. It'd mainly be for me to play with for a few years until my yearling is old enough to work - maybe to sell or maybe to keep - depends on the horse and if I really like it or not!

I have seen a lovely unbroken 4 year old arab x appaloosa and an 11 year old trakhener that has sat in the field for the last year due to lack fo time. And that has got me thinking - do I go for a youngster to back and bring on or go for something that is maybe a bit more sensible and has done it all, but is a bit older? Although I don't know if I will sell on, it is always a possibility that I need to keep int he back of my mind. Not sure what'd be best for me?

Without knowing whether there may or may not be a reason why the older horse was left in the field, Id o for the youngster. Plus it would probably be the easier to sell in 3-4 years if needs be.

Depends a lot on how experienced and confident you are. If you are novice or nervous definately an older one, otherwise I agree with the others, a youngster.

Never backed one myself before, but certainly not a novice or nervous. I have brought on youngsters before and have always been told the initial backing is not the hard part - it's what comes after! I'd have help if I needed it anyway.

What is making me want to go for an older one is that I can get a bit more horse for my money - older horse is well bred. but spose that means chuff all if it comes with a load of problems. Also I think I might be able to get on and do things faster with an older one.

TheMule posted about a 4/5 yo cheap project horse yesterday which sounded nice - pm her! Id go for young over old every time. :)

ditto what wolfie said i had a older horse which had been prof produced and have a youngster that wasnt touched much i would go for untouched youngster as they have been less likely to be exposed and abused to / with things youd rather they havent!

me personally I'd buy a youngster, then again my TB was relatively cheap, and he's 14! it depends entirely on the individual, and what you're after.
