My child was 8 weeks old when first pony arrived (pony was mid-teens). Pony was actually more of a companion to my other horse than a child's pony! Once child was off the lead rein she did a stint at a riding school before getting another pony at nearly 9 years old. (Pony was then about 14). I have no inclination to work out my age at any of the purchases, but I'm no spring chicken.

I'm not going to be very helpful, as i've just got Fred his 1st pony (on loan rather than bought) & he's 11 months, he loves sitting & standing on him & watching him eat, so IMO its never too early!!

IMO A child should be bought a pony when they are old enough to really want for it themselves, without it just being bought for them before they know they want one!

I had my first pony on loan at 8yrs old - a little shetland who would throw me off at every given opportunity!
Got Tally for my 10th birthday present and she's still with me. She was 12 when we bought her.
