Buying a foal

Thanks lec. There aren't many as it's more a breeder than a stud, but they do seem to be very trainable and are lovely horses to have around. None are by fashionable stallions particularly.

Humph - you may have seen some of them in the flesh, as I think you came here to try Max (the Melton Hunt Ride horse) didn't you?

Again, thank you for all posting. I'd forgotten about Brendonhill so thx for reminding me of them - will tootle off there to find out more.

Baydale, fashion doesn't matter one jot, this isn't buying to sell on in a few years so whether in or out of fashion makes no odds just a genuinely good horse is what I hope for! You've got us right though, my husband, Henry came to try out Max when i was pregnant last time around - what a good memory! Certainly your horses have been doing very well, although, from what I've seen/heard on here, it sounds like you've spent more time in a hospital bed than the saddle this season - I hope you are back in one piece now. I hadn't realised they were Brendonhill offspring, which ones of yours are brendonhill boys?

Thx again,

They're not Brendonhill, sorry, they're all Baydales from Yorkshire and genuine as genuine can be.

Sorry to bore you, but of my three, or four if you include Juno who was the original mare I had on loan from the breeder:

Juno went to intermediate and is now a broodmare (and dam of Jupiter)

Hector went to advanced but is nearly as accident prone as me, so is looking for a quieter life

HH is on an intermediate plateau - big lump is taking his time about growing into himself

Jupiter is only 4 so not quite ready for Burghley main arena, just Ring 2 stuff.

Then there's Baydale Venus (4yo)was Hack of the Year at HOYS - she's full sister to HH and is still owned by the breeder; also Baydale Findhorn was doing well at PN but sadly had to be PTS this year. Oh, and not forgetting Red Rock of Baydale, aka Arthur, the ginger Cleveland Bay who's a hunter, almost (he belongs to my OH).

I've got some vid of a v nice foal out of Hector's dam if you'd like to see it?

Interestingly, historically Event sires never evented themselves or had dams that evented as many came from the fields of racing, often as relatively speaking 'failed' racehorses.

Some non-eventing Event sires would include -
Master Spiritus, Ben Faerie, Primitive Rising, Ben Auk, Criminal Law, Master Imp, King of Diamonds, Cruising, Cavalier Royale... some didn't compete much at all, even as racehorses, and others competed in other fields such as SJ.

Competing stallions at the top levels in Eventing is a relatively new thing - primarily started by Sam Barr - and has reflected the move from the use of TB sires to a more purpose bred sire who was often a part-bred. Given the value of some of these animals, it's not surprising that many owners choose not to put their stallions on the line eventing, given it is one of the more dangerous equestrian sports (from a catastophic injury perspective).

I think the key is to look for performance in a family, not necessarily just eventing, and certainly dam lines are absolutely crucial when it comes to increasing the chances of having top performing animals.

Some of those great stallions would have had hundreds of mares in their time and a low percentage would have made it to 4*. I just think that the mare is equally if not more important and if a mare has generations of jumping blood in her background, then when put to the right stallion (which i accept could be a TB which has never evented), then you have half a chance of breeding something which can at least jump. After all, isn't this what the contentals have been doing for years ie breeding for jumping ability or in the case of dressage horses, movement and trainability.

I will def get in touch when I can get up to Lincs to come and see you. For some reason I'm a bit daunted by going stud visiting as I've never done it before....

Ill second the fact that Julia was lovely to talk to when I spoke to her about my mare!!!!!
I found it a bit daunting going to see studs but you get the hang of it!!!

Good luck

Oh can hopefully help with foals next year. I have 2 x WISH UPON A STAR foals due, one out of a JUMBO mare (she is also a full sister to Henry Tankerville). A BRIEF ENCOUNTER out of a TB mare who is granddam of STORMHILL MICHAEL (who I sold to Mary Gordon Watson as a 3 yr old) and another BRIEF ENCOUNTER out of a KINGSMASTER mare...but hey lets get live foals on the ground before I get ahead of myself!!!!

Breeding is a hobby for me and the foals are never crazy money, the piority is good homes where they will be loved and given a chance to shine.

The filly by WUAS on Horsequest is mine and only one phonecall is a sure sign of the economic climate! I have now abandoned advertising the other foals this year altogether!

Good luck with your search next yr, we are blessed with some lovely horses in the UK - you should be spoilt for choice!
