Buying a horse......a few questions

I am not planning on buying another horse but I just got thinking today.....when I bought my lad it was a cash in hand with no vetting (risky yes I know).
How did you go about buying your horse?
Did you have any documents drawn up to say you bought the horse, do any documents such as that need to be drawn up like they do in a loan arrangment?
Was just wondering if people drew something up to with the details of the horse on to say he was purchased by Mr X from Mr Y for x amount of money on x date?

No documents just bought my horse that had been on loan, so no vetting either

No vetting and paid cash.

I wouldn't recommend to anyone not to get a horse vetted, but my situation was a little different. I knew the background of the horse through my trainer (she helped the old owner buy her two years ago when she came with x-rays) and managed to get under the asking price because i offered no hassle. I made sure i got a reciept tho.

I have had old horses who were vetted and came up with problems a few weeks later, even though they passed a 5 stage.

I think buying can be pot luck sometimes.

Last horse had 5 stage (she was expensive).
2 horses before that were pretty cheap so I didn't vet, paid cash and ended up with 2 great, fit and healthy neddies.

Each to their own I guess.

Didn't get my a last one vetted as she was a foal when I bought her. I did get my first horse vetted. I had know the horse for nearly a year and been riding her for her owner who was pregnant for a couple of months before I bought her, to see if she was right for me. I still got her vetted, I saw it as an MOT to see if there was anthing we needed to look out for. She failed because she had mild laminitis. So we treated her for that, then the vet came back out to finish off the rest of the vetting and passed her.

Last horse - paid cash and no vetting and got receipt. Passport came with horse. Horse is exactly as described and 8 months later I am thrilled with her.
Last horse before that - was given to me as victim of divorce. Owner signed him over to me. 7 years later we still have him, although he is now retired.
Last horse before that one - paid a lot of money without vetting. Ten years later, he is now happily retired and still very much part of the family.
Tilly - came free

, as we bought her mother not knowing she was in foal. Sadly lost the mare shortly after Tilly was born and we hand-reared her at great expense. Probably cost the most out of all of them in real terms

i only have the expensive ones vetted 4 insurance purposes, also if i sell one i give them a recipe, but then my horsrs have always been under 3000. i bought my current appolosa from the travellers for 2000, she was very poor and blind in one eye , but do u no wat she turned out 2 be the best horse ive ever had, and ive had a big strong foal from her last year, and she was a fantastic mummy.... sorry to go on,

No vetting (but eyes and heart checked) and paid in cash. However this was a breeder/dealer who we knew and trusted.

Of course I did get a receipt. Said the name of horse and amount paid, and both signed and adressed it.
