Hi, I am just wondering if anyone on here has any experience with buying Lusitanos or Andalusians from abroad. I am considering buying one abroad as unfortunetly there are not a lot of Lusos of Andalusians in the UK to choose from and I have seen some lovely ones in Spain! I was just wanting to know what experiences people have had.

Thanks

Can't help you but I'd be interested in any replies as I was about to post the same!!
We have an apartment in Portugal and I am going to have some dressage lessons in July when we are there, on a schoolmaster. I've done some research and Lusos with good movement for dressage are expensive!! Also researching Andalusians - PRE's are more expensive as Andalusians can cover anything and aren't purebred.
There seem to be lots of agents around but seeing a grainy video of some horse being chased around a sandpit has put me off!!! I could imagine many spanish horses are kept in a completely different way, ridden mostly by men, it appears and seem to do lateral work and spanish walk etc almost immediately.
Can't wait to be put right though!!!

I live in Portugal and have a luso x arab and a Alta Real luso mare :D as well as a SF, hano and trekhener haha

Portuguese horses are for sure brought up and ridden in a very different way!

There are quite a few crooks and shady guys trying to sell off their PSG dresage luso's who actually end up having knackered backs, legs, necks, feet etc!

Any questions I will try to help :p

My PRE came from Spain.
You can certainly buy in England and I could point you in the direction of some studs I have come across. I'm a member of BAPSH and they all advertise etc, so wouldn't be hard to send you their names to contact.
However, for me personally, I would go to Spain.
If you go to Spain I would take your time and go with a reputable agent. Unless you speak Spanish and have a very good eye you could become a bit stuck!
You need to think long and hard as to what you are after too - there are show horses, breed horses and dressage horses etc.

Wish you luck they are wonderful horses!

Get on Facebook and join the BAPSH group and ask your question there, you will get some really honest and helpful answers. As with any other type of horse its a case of buyer beware! There are great people and there are rogues. You need to either have experience of the breed or the help of someone who has.
I've had my PRE for nearly 4 years now and he came from Spain as a newly gelded 5 year old. He is AMAZING, but the first 18 months were hell!

Google Fiona Foy and contact her. She is based in the UK but has many contacts in Spain and will source and try suitable horses for you. Good luck.

There was someone (a bloke) on here who posted about their buying from Spain not long ago (towards the end of last year?). I'm sorry, I can't remember their name, but he lived in France, if anyone can recall? I haven't seen any recent posts from him. I'm sure he would have useful info/contacts.

Mrs Hutt - He posts regularly on the BAPSH FB page. - Interesting reading for anyone thinking buying an Iberian is a walk in the park (but the same can be said for any breed of horse)

Hello there :)

I bought my PRE stallion in south Spain last summer and brought him over here.

I'm spanish and my uncle works for some studs training their horses, so if you want any help, just let me know. More than happy to help :)

Thanks for the help everyone! I had been thinking it might be easier to get a horse from Spain than in Portugal as there seem to be more horses in Spain aimed at foreign buyers. I also heard that the horses in Portugal don't tend to get hacked out much, true?

When I can think of some good questions to ask I will be in touch :)
