Buying a horse - Have you ever bought the opposite to what you were looking for?

Yes! Didn't want a mare and didn't want a chesnut and certainly didn't want a combination of the two.... So what do I have a chesnut mare. :)

Me too ;)

As a child I always had scruffy little veteran ponies so this time I wanted a "proper" horse (aaww that sounds really mean to my little ponies, but you know what I mean!)

So I was looking for a 16-16.2, WB/ISH type, preferably gelding, about 6-7.

Ended up with a 15hh, 8yr old, very overweight chestnut Breton x Andalucian mare  Lufs her though :D

Wanted a cob, 15hh - 15.2hh (any bigger wouldnt have fit in my stable :p)
As chunk as possible, sane, sensible, been there and done it all type.
Or a cob foal :)

Ended up with 14hh, fine-ish welsh x mare, 13yo and completley insane

Take 2 .. wanted somthing 12hh - 13hh, new forest, dartmoor ect somthing i could have some fun inhand with - did not want grey welshie!

Bough grey welsh :p

Went to Ireland looking for nice Irish Bay 16.2/17.2hh mare 5-10 years came home with 18ish hh Grey gelding 10years. Who I would now not change for the world.

Yep, I wanted a 16 to 16.2 hh young horse, for eventing, preferably full tb or as near as. Oh and no coloureds or greys.

I bought a 17hh (ish - too scared to measure!!) 4 year old coloured gelding, half bred tb.
He is still for eventing though, just a different "type" :)

When I bought Legend I wanted a 16-16.3 bay gelding about 5 and ended up with exactly that. This time round I was more flexible (16-17h, 4-6 to event, prefer Tb type)but did not want a bay gelding so I ended up with... Yep a bay WB gelding! He is lovely though :D

I wanted a ...15.2 mare, any colour except grey, alrounder at least 7yrs old. And ended up with a ...16hh gelding, grey 4yr old exracer which new nothing so was deffo not an alrounder :p But he did turn out to be a classy wee horse.

I really never ever post just lurk, however I thought on this occasion I really had to!

I was looking for a WB around the 16hh mark, around 5, broken unbroken I didn't mind to eventually do dressage to quite a high level on.................What i got a 13.2hh 4yo unbroken welsh sec C!! A much more fun choice, and he's not half bad at the dressage thing either!!

I was looking for a laidback cob type as my first horse after a 15year break from riding.

Came home with a spooky, occasionally highly strung 8yr old tb x welsh x ID sporthorse who has taught me to ride all over again and is the best thing I could have done.
We have an incredible bond- very much a one person horse- and he will be with me for life :)

Well I said I'd never buy a welshie again after my last sec D turns out (after some phoning around) that my new aquisition - A supposed Irish Gypsy Cob is 1/2 Welsh 1/4 shire and 1/4 coloured hairy... but he is fab tho'!

Bx

I was open to various types, sizes and colours but had in mind what I DIDN'T want:

Mare
Grey (we always always seem to have greys)
A horse that was green or wouldn't hack alone
Anything over 16hh

Ended up with:

Mare
Grey
Green and won't hack unless with someone walking or cycling or another horse
16.2hh

Oops.

Yep! In my dreams I had a nice gelding, most likely native or native x, no chestnuts or greys, absolutely no arabs and between 15 and 16 hh. Well I got that bit right at least because what I bought (and in all honesty I wasn't really planning to actually BUY a horse, just dream about it) was a 15.1 hh chestnut Welsh D x (definitely has extra arab in there) mare. Hmmm. Has to be said though that as soon as I met her I absolutely had to have her. Also has to be said that no-one else would want her :)

Went looking for absolutely ages - definitely did not want another mare, definitely not a grey - nothing under 10 years old - not more that 16hh - no foreigh horses

Ended up with a 6 year old grey Dutch warmblood mare who was 16.1hh when we got her and is now 17.1hh

But you try and part her from my daughter - never going to happen :)

I was never keen on Welsh Cobs, just didn't like them much. I really wanted a black Dales or Fell but ended up going to see a black Welsh Cob colt and bought a chestnut colt and a bay filly instead. I definitely didn't want a bay or a filly but she has turned out to be the best pony ever.

I was looking for a 15.3hh-16hh sportshorse or lightweight warmblood gelding. About 12yrs. Well schooled to do BD with. I didn't mind anything a bit green to jump as not fussed about jumping.

I did NOT want anything cobby, native, hairy, grey or coloured or anything too green. Anything under 15.3hh or over 16.1hh Upto £3.5k

I got... 7yo 15.1hh *sigh* WHITE,,, no he's not grey he's full on white.. Connemara gelding. Never done dressage, not well schooled (the concept of working rounded is lost on him) will jump anything, silly out hacking alone, fine in company. Well over £3.5k - but I adore him :D

Yep, was looking for a 10 year old 15 - 15.2hh cobby type with plenty of bone and maturity,
ended up with a 6 year old 16.1hh full TB, never regretted it.

I was after a 14-15hh, quiet, safe cob type to plod about the country lanes on...ended up falling for a 16hh(ish), stubborn, at times plain rude TBx. I'm pretty sure he has a few screws loose, but after working at a few issues we seem to have clicked & now he is on the way to becoming a Dressage Diva! I wouldn't swap him for the world...well on most days ;)

I wanted any horse as long as ,
1, was not chestnut,
2, was not a mare,
3, did not have 4 white legs,
4 was not arab,
5, was not tb.
Well i got all 5....lol and would not swap her for anything.

I know i didn't want a mare nor anything too TB like or young, and i ended up with a 2 yo TBx mare! I got the colour i wanted though!

I was looking for

16hh +
Young horse (4 - 6)
TB/Warmblood type

I ended up with

14hh
10years
Hafflinger.

And I always said I hated haflingers and wouldn't touch one with a barge pole! Woops, I love him though, wouldn't part with him for the world.

Well, I've mainly long-term loaned until my last two (the first one taught me heaps but was a little bugger, the second is my current jumper) but a few years ago my mum wanted a 16hh+ solid hunter type to hunt, do fun rides on, unaff SJ, HT, ODE, XC (about once a year) and hack about but instead ended up with an 8 year old 14.2hh welsh D x arab. We loaned him for two years first though (with many grumbles on her part) before buying - the owners only let us have him because I'd loaned one of their small ponies so they knew and trusted us (they bred him so were v. attached and didn't want him going to a child because he was highly unpredictable and flighty). He's 13 now and going strong, still hunting but I can BSJA him in the summer though - he turned out great even though he wasn't what we wanted at all, but mum says we'll never sell him. Even though he's only small, he'll jump the moon out hunting and she field mastered on him for a season :)

yup when i was younger mum said when the time was right i could have any horse (within reason) which would have been a warmblood or irish sports horse ended up rescuing my dales pony who was unruly and naughty although now a compleat angel she wasnt an ideal first horse but looking back i would not have learnt half as much without her i adore bronte and evey min that i have spent with her even the emergency dismounts hahaha

We very nealy bought a 10yo who had evented up to novice, schoolmaster type and was 16.3
The only thing that put us off was his height.

We then ended up with a "16.1" 4yo with little mileage - I think it's fair to say we would have achieved 10% in a prelim test at best ;).
She's now 16.3 and may still grow a little bit :o but I wouldn't change her for the world, I'm even going to local uni's so I can keep her where she is and carrying on with her education and enjoy many years together.

Yep!

Wanted: 8-10yr old warmblood to do some dressage on, bay mare. Sound with no problems and cuddly in the stable.

Bought: 7yr chestnut gelding TB ex racehorse...dressage currently not his strong point but working on it! Failed vetting (bone spavin), accident prone, not exactly the most cuddly horse I've ever met! (but I wouldnt change him for the world and don't regret it for a minute)!!!

Oh well! I call it fate...

Done it twice out of two horses.

First time looking for a 15hh slow cob beginner type of horse.
Came back with a 16.2+ TBX Gelding that loved to jump.

Second time, went out looking for an older cobX type horse with experience that I could take out competing straight away.
Came back with a 5yo just broken TBX Polo Pony that needed to be taught everything from lifting his feet up. Best Horse in the world though <3

^_^
