I am looking into buying a horse. I am based in Northern Ireland so would prefer something based in NI or just over the border.

Looking for 15-16.2hh forward going horse with brakes. Able to jump a course around 80cm-1m. Fancy breeding and colour unimportant. Looking for a good temperament and something that isn't just broken. Horse will not be used to compete or do anything crazy.

Can anyone recommend anywhere to get something like this? Have been looking at River Lodge Stables, Sheans Horse Farm, donedeal and Facebook groups. Also, how much should I expect to pay for something similar to what I have described?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hey Lauren

If it helps I have also heard good things about Coopers Hill.
Its a hard one especially as FB are clamping down so much on the ads. The group which used to be called horses for sale / loan in ireland (I think they renamed it 'all things equine' or something) might be a good place to place a wanted ad? you'd have to weed through the replies with your sensible head on. Same with Done deal I guess. I've been lucky in that I've sort of fallen into most of my horses.

I do know of one who would probably fit your bill but he's mid teens, not sure if thats too old for you.
If you are looking something 7-12yo that will jump round a meter course and not buck you off and hack out nicely and will pass the vet I'd say you're looking at £5k ish.
If you're prepared to compromise on age, or vices / health management issues, then less than that. A horse that will and has confidently jumped round 1m courses is more expensive than one to pootle round an 80/85, if that makes sense.

Friend of mine is selling exactly that - a really nice homebred 16.2 - I think he's 8. She's asking 5k euros and is in Galway, to give you an idea.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, anything that I've looked at has been around the £4000/£5000 mark so I'd rather make the investment now and get the right horse because it will never be sold. Ideally would like something based in the North but I have seen some lovely ones down south so might have to travel a bit further to get what I want.

I know... I'm hoping a few will come up in September time when people are going back to school/uni and want to sell their summer project. Just have to keep an eye out I suppose and ask about!
