Hi there,

I went to see a really lovely hunter type horse today who I think brushes slightly behind.

He has been placed quite highly at a local County show in working hunter and local hunter and against horses that have qualified for HOYS.

The thing is I am being quite particular about what I am looking for this time! I had a mare that was sold to me as a schoolmistress from an Olympic Irish Event rider who turned out to be extremely nappy and a nasty rearer. Consequently I managed to sell her to a good hunting home who weren't that bothered as they got a very nice mare for a very nice price. So I am now looking for something to restore my confidence which has been knocked.

The chap I saw today seems to tick all the boxes has hunted, SJ, Dsg, shown etc. I really like showing and doing the hunter classes but don't want to get in the ring at Countyish level and get penalised for having him brush.

Any advice would be great before I decide to get my vet out!

Many thanks
Cathy

It's a country estate where the owners have hunted him, so not really a producer.

Can't see any other conformation problems. I know some horses brush when there are unfit and he is probably half fit at the moment. He also has no marks or scars

Thanks
cathy

well in that case I would not worry too much, just make sure he is booted all the time inc turn out Of course it all depends on cost, ie if he is priced to account for this or not.

If you want him for showing, then providing that is the only problem he has and it is just a matter of being slightly close rather than being "built" very badly, then you should be OK. As you say, he may improve when he is more muscled, but then again, he may not. You say you "think" he brushes behind. Did you have him trotted up in hand for you? If so, did he brush then?

Yeah...I think he did brush hen he was trotted up. The thing is I am really crap at all the conformation stuff! I am now going back tomorrow (since writing this post!) to have another look with a friend who has a better eye than me

depends on what you want him for? if you are serious about showing then its an important thing to think about. you mentioned needing to get your confidence back?
perhaps this is more important than the level/type of showing you want to do?
i think wh classes are not as strict on brushing as showing classes.
perhaps you could email a show producer/judge or affiliated "club" and see what they say?

I saw your post in the veterinary section and have posted an answer there.

lizstuguinness makes a valid point, weighing up confidence over getting placed at a county show - I know which I would choose!

Conformation is very important and if you are crap at it you must have at least one other who can recognise faults look at this horse. I looked at mine 3 times before I decided to buy her - the owners kindly left me with her for hours while I picked her conformation to pieces! She has a long back but everything else was very good, so I can live with that.
