I phoned up about a horse today and he sounds fab but the guy said he has a small spilint, does anyone have experience of this? and does it effect the horse in any way? the horse is a 5yo. tell me your thoughts!
My horse developed a splint as a 5 year old which did not affect him at all and he has since re-absorbed it so he has no sign of ever having had one. Just make sure it is not too near the knee joint as they tend to be more troublesome
Micah has a large splint with a small scar on it, as I wanted him for SJ and DR and not showing it didn't bother me at all.
So unless you want to show then no it wouldn't bother me, providing it is not too close to the knee
Edited to say if you want to show at county level then no I would not buy him. a small one may not make that much difference BUT if he already has one at 5 he may easily get a bigger one once you start jumping etc
I'd say it depends on the horse and what you want to show it as. I wouldn't buy a hack with splints but hunters and riding horses are often given more leeway. It's also worth remembering that they're judged separately on ride and conformation so if everything else is pretty perfect I wouldn't let a smallish splint put me off. There are some top show horses with splints and judges have differing views in this area - you soon find out which ones do and don't like your horse.
