Buying a horse without a passport?!

Apparently they can't afford to register/passport it it's just go e 2yo

A passport last time I looked was somewhere between £15-25 , if you cant afford that how on earth can you afford the horse in the first place?

Im sure failure to register a horse or apply for a passport is around £5,000 and you can spend time in prison(cant remember how long it is)

Each time I read threads like this I find the whole passport scheme a bit of a farce that appears to be full of holes.

Yup, whole thing is a joke. I cannot take it seriously when there is no central register recording what's going on. I'm not a buyer or seller of horses in any shape manner or form and the number of questionable passports I've seen is higher that it should be.

My two still aren't in my name, they'll be with me till they die so why bother paying to change them? Not even gotten around to changing their chips either, oops.

It is totally illegal to buy a horse without a passport. .

wrong, it is illegal to sell a horse without a passport, it is not illegal to buy a horse without a passport.
the whole system is a joke, daughters first pony had no passport, he was 15 yr's old when i passported him to sell him and there were no questions asked by either my vet or the passport agency.

It is totally illegal to buy a horse without a passport. There are a lot of stolen horses out there and dodgy dealers will sell them on without passports. Please report anyone who deals in horses and admits to not having passports- we need to stamp out crime.

Incorrect !! It is illegal to sell without a passport but not to buy, although it is illegal to transport the pony without a passport.

I bought my new boy 3 months ago without a passport. Booked the vet to come out and chip / identify, the receptionists were a bit snotty with me but the vet was fine, and my horse was no easy job being a blue road tobiano LOL

I understand what you are saying, but not every unpassported horse is stolen, probably the minority !

I'd get vet out to check for chips and if none do silhouette and chip then. You need to decide what agency you go with. My last cost us nearer £150 to £15!

Do you know sire/dam? If you want confirmed and still around you'd probably need covering certs, dam and sires pedigrees etc. We had to pay a late payment (after 6months old) too.

If you are buying for the horse not the pedigree then I'd simply find who was cheapest and do it that way :) I'd get it scanned for any chip in there now on current owners costs (to prove not stolen) and accept the rest of it as the horse being cheaper for it.

this is an interesting topic, if a horse's passport isnt proof of ownership then what is?.. just a receipt?

sounds like the same thing with a log book of the car. Although your name appears as registered 'keeper' the DVLA states that document is not proof of ownership either.

If a horse passport covered the owner as regards legal ownership perhaps people might be more motivated to get one as the current system is obviously abused left right and center as a lot of lower end dealers cant be asred to go to the expense of having horses passported which is enabled by (some) buyers such as the OP's friend being happy to buy a horse without one.

The whole system is becoming a bit farcical really.

I brought a horse without a passport 2 yrs ago.
Supposedly lost.
Vet was out yesterday and my horse needed meds, I said I've got no passport for this horse and nothing was said or no ??? Asked.

Receipt is proof of ownership. Always worth paying by bank transfer... If you lose receipt you still have proof of purchase, stick horse name etc in subject.
I have never produced a passport for any of the horses, have all though.
