Afternoon all,

I am currently on the hunt for a lorry, preferably 7.5 tonnes, to take either 2 or 3 horses, 8 foot head height and living. I don't have a huge budget (£10,000 give or take) and I was wondering if a) anyone knows of any reputable dealers around the south east/central England or b) the approximate cost of getting a lorry built?

It seems like such a minefield out there, and I'm so scared of buying a dud!

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated 😊

I had one built before and I regretted it. Admittedly I didn't go with one of the well known companies and in hindsight that was a mistake. The lorry ended up weighing more than anticipated (they didn't advise me that the extras they kept suggesting would massively impact the payload!) and it took much longer for the conversion than they originally advised. I've since bought a second hand PRB and it was a much better investment!! If you do buy second hand just get a very good mechanic to check it before you part with any cash (really recommend Brad Hope from Bicester Horsebox Hire - everyone I know rates him highly for vetting horseboxes, and I'm really pleased with the one he advised me to go with).

I would also think it is virtually impossible to get a 7.5tonne lorry with living for £10k (unless you already had the chassis and the £10k was just for the conversion). Whatever you decide to do, make sure you check the payload - I think you'll struggle to find a 7.5t that can take 3 and has a living.

I did think that £10k probably wouldn't be enough to have a lorry built! It only needs to carry one horse, so I'm hoping that weight isn't an issue with them normally - she's not that fat! Haha.

Was going to visit horsebox seller tomorrow to see a lorry, does anyone have any views on them?

I bought mine from them last year. Just make sure you get it checked out beforehand - they are very good salesmen! Mine is fine but was upper end.

We bought a new build on 56plat chassis from them last January, as nicnac says, they are very good sales men!

We had a tonne of trouble with ours in the first year, they were a nightmare to get anything out of when things fell in the warranty, we got it sorted eventually but it was a pain at the time and things that fell out of the warranty have cost almost an additional £1500!
