I am possibly looking into buying a lorry instead of a new trailer as i think it will be easier as our towing vehicle is on its last legs!!

Does anyone know how much i will be needing to spend for a little 3.5 tonne 2 horse lorry? Doesnt have to be perfect just reliable and not look like a tatty shed on wheels!!

You could prob find a nice renault master for 6k. VWlt35 you seem to be able tp pick up cheaper as well as ford transits.

Whatever you do get the vehicle checked by a mechanic as you could end up spending as much as you bouht it for on repairs (we learnt the hard way).

If you want something new build then you are looking at £16k +.

Have a look at www.freewebs.com/traveltwo They are very helpful and have some nice older vehicles sometimes.

Whatever you pay for it, and that can be very little if you look around, I would strongly advise you get a reputable commercial vehicle mechanic to go over every inch of it for you. Pull up whatever matting there is in the back and have a good look at the floor, stab it with a screwdriver it should not have any rot. Also get the tyres checked at a commercial tyre depot.

I have learned from experience over the years I have owned lorries and the day the clutch went in a cheap lorry I was driving with two horses in the back is a day I will never forget!

The old adage, "you get what you pay for" could not be more true with horse lorries.

[/ QUOTE ] I think that is so true, as it is with most things in life. I love my Renault Master, its a great little vehicle, but I doubt I would be happy to have an old one. Crucially, they only put the more powerful engine in them late 2002. It depends what you ned to carry of course, but having an engine that struggles surely can't be very safe on hills etc

A lot of the other types of 3.5 tonnes look quite unstable to me, as they seem to be like a box perched atop of the wheels

A lot of the IVECOs look good and I can recommend the post later 2002 RM

and get it weighed!
Some older 3.5 tonne boxes do not have the payload to take one horse and its kits for a day, let alone two.

3.5 tonners are also in so much demand for young drivers that they fetch a premium price.
