my old hat is a size 2, 57 cm. i've jst measured my head and make it 56. the hat i want isnt sold in my tack shop, but i can get it online. if i try a hat on in a shop, are all manufacturers sizes the same? i want the jte sprint or champion ventair. my old hat is comfortable altho sometimes it does slip fwd, so i guess it may be a size too big.

I measured my head and i was 56 cm, i bought a hat online and it was too small,

i guess it needs a bit of extra room. I don't think it works just measuring your head.

really need to go to a shop and get hat properly fitted! different makes come up different shapes even if the same size!

Yep - sometimes even different models from the same manufacturer come up different - I tried a Champion Ventair and needed a different size to what I take in a Champion velvet.

I would go get fitted professionally! And no one size isnt standard across the different manufactrers. I'm a size 71/8 in charles owen trad riding hats but a size 7 in skull cap, my old champion skull cap was 71/8 but my new champion is 63/4 and my JTE riding hat is size 7. I always get fitted when i buy a new hat as each one sits differently on my head.

Go to a shop. Personally I don't like the look of Ventairs, prefer my black velvet, and remember if you get that hat you will have to get another one for XC (you're not allowed a fixed peak). Also get it properly fitted as aside from measurement there is the fact that different makes stuff them differently, will the hat slightly adjust to your head, does it flop about etc. etc. etc. that you can't get online. I'm surprised you're in cm, I'm 7" and 1/8.

Definitely go to a shop. I spent a lot of time trying every brand of hat I could find (our family have unusual shaped heads I think, as not many fitted). Would have loved a Ventair but my head is just the wrong shape - long enough but the hat was too wide at the sides. A shop will be able to fit and advise, and also to add a little padding where needed for the perfect fit.
