As post title. Going to look at a 13.2 next week and have been told tack and rugs are extra. Obviously they need to be the correct fit but if they are what would you offer for english tack and a turnout rug or synthetic tack and a rug??? Haven't seen the tack yet so can't comment on it just wanted a guesstimate really. Thanks

Depends on whether or not they really want to sell the tack and whether or not you actually want it, I only sold some of my 13.2's tack as the saddle fitted the other pony. It really depends on the condition / make of the tack too - if it's cheap stuff then I'd be tempted to leave it where it is.

If the pony is suitable will probably only buy the tack if it's a really good fit. Just wanted an idea of how much to offer perhaps I'll have a look on ebay to see what saddles are going for.

I always decided not to buy the tack as I am very definite in what I like but having now had several ponies that were very difficult to fit, and having had a couple of months without suitable tack, I would now seriously consider buying the tack, but only if a) the saddle was in good condition and was a very good fit, b) it was a saddle that had been custom fitted to the pony already, c) it fitted the rider well, or d) it was cheap enough and suitable enough to get me through until I'd found what I really wanted.

On average the last 3 saddles I have had to buy (2nd hand but perfect) have cost me approx £350 each (English leather, not synthetic), so I would start less than that and go up to that if I had to. As for bridles, again I'm very fussy and generally I don't like the pony bridles other people have or theirs don't fit in the way I like it (buckles not lining up etc) and by the time they have been altered I would have been better off buying one / having one made to fit in the first place. Second hand bridles don't go for much so I wouldn't offer much for it, especially if I was paying them reasonable money for the saddle.

As for rugs, you can get good rugs quite cheaply now (am guessing the pony would take approx 5'6 rug) so unless you are sure it is waterproof, the right fit, will do the job you want it for, then I'd probably start afresh with a new one.

Another way to look at it, having found this myself, is that when you have tack left over from a sale, it is hard to get rid of, and then you find yourself wishing you'd let it go with the pony - so perhaps the sellers wouldn't have too high a price expectation. How about asking them to give you price, you look horrified, and then haggle them down!

Sorry, that all turned out a bit long winded - it was only going to be a quick reply! Good luck with it all, hope the pony is just want you are hoping for.

I'd think seriously about buying the saddle with the pony if I thought it fitted resonably. Its the one thing thats could take a little bit of time to buy the right one, and if you pay more or less market value for it you can sell it on for roughly the same on ebay.

when i sold a horse last year i offered the lady who bought him his saddle , bridle , light , medium & heavy rugs in both turnout & stable along with a masta cooler for £500 , she accepted , all were in good condition but i had originally bought the saddle second hand

we both felt we had a fair deal
