I am looking to buy a puppy with my partner obviously i want to make the right decision and not rush so here are my questions.

Out of bulldog/french bulldog/ pom or a chi.

I would like to know all the different health issues you have had, temperment ect..do they shed alot, how much walking? and so on.

Which would you buy? and why?

And with regards to breeding which are most complicated or have most issues? i will not be breeding the puppy is a pet i would just like to know this bit for my vet coursework!

Many Thanks!

Very different breeds with very different temperaments and all shed a lot.
The best source of information is to go to the breed club & breed rescue web pages. You can find these via the Kennel Club site.

I would get a Frenchie. However Frenchies and Bulldogs both can have breathing problems and over-shot jaws are quite common too.

Out of that list the pom would be the breed with the least breed specific health issues.

The bulldogs particularly English bulldogs would be on my list of breeds I cannot recommend to people who I like. They are just heartache waiting to happen.
They are gorgeous characters, proper little clowns, but the list of health issues is extensive and IMO can severely affects the quality of life of the poor creatures who lose in the genetic lottery. Granted I have been meeting the dogs with the worst issues lately which has given me a bias against the breed. But honestly I do think that the extreme breeding and features has left the English bulldogs in particular an extremely unhealthy breed.
The french bulldogs have less extreme features than the english and are less likely to get the dermatological problems but they are still at risk of breathing difficulties etc....
If you go down the bulldog route health insurance (comprehensive not one year plans) is a MUST and its quite expensive for these breeds.

Chi's have a different range of issue associated with the breed but in general I would class them as a healthier breed than the bulldogs.I have met a variety of Chis and quite like them as a breed though some of the spoilt ones can be proper little monsters!Overall they have been lovely little lapdogs to their owners.

Poms IMO they are often healthy little creatures though some can be a bit temperamental.
They do need some maintenance on their coats however.

As for breeding....bulldogs both french and English are known for having a high level of cesareans. Chis can also have some issues with puping. These are often related to the size of the pups heads as opposed to the mothers pelvic canal. Poms can have the same issue but it is not as common.

Another thing to do is research the breed and the lines and put the parents names into the KC website to see they are registered and any health checks they need.

And yes they all shred, all dogs shred expect the hairless breed. It's a myth that they don't just some shed more than others.

What are you actually looking for? I.e. what's on your tick list?

Bulldogs are fabulous. My absolute fave breed however some of them are freaks and if buying do your research. My boy lived till he was 8 and had no health issues at all bar a bit of juvenile bad skin.

Franchie never had one but would deffo consider.

Chi - never. Mum had one years ago and it would have taken your arm off if it could.

Pm - know nothing about them.

I'm getting another Bulldog so that would be my choice. They are addictive.

I think to be honest I am looking for something quite easy. I have a illness so I don't work so have all day every day and would like a companion to keep me company. The less walks they need the better but can walk up to a hour twice a day. Don't really want one that's yappy I have viewed French and bulldog the bulldog is adorable and seem a lot quieter but there a bit too big and the French I also love but not sure if they would be too hyper and need lots of walking. I just want something to keep me company something with a little character and they seem to be the best choice. But I am just finding difficult to decide as I know they do have health issues so whichever had the least I would guess. Money is not a problem just don't want to have the heartbreak of it all had enough of that with horses with health problems. Thanks for all your brilliant advice :-)

Given your health why don't you consider an older rescue dog. That way you will know its character and how much exercise / barking it does.

Puppies are hard work and even though bullies are couch potatos when they are older mine was still a live wire as a puppy. He was surprisingly agile tbh.

we have a french bulldog, he is one of the nicest dogs we ever had, like a clown sometimes. He has rather a delicate stomach and have to be careful about his diet, he also suffers from the heat other than that have not had any health issues.

Just seen this and thought I would reply :)

Im guessing you've gone for those 4 breeds because of their looks? Thats not a bad thing, but they all have extremely different temperaments!

Bulldogs - don't need huge amounts of exercise, snore a lot, have countless health issues in general, dont need much grooming, can be difficult to obedience train, often quite selective and stubborn

French bulldogs - actually are robust and energetic little dogs, enjoy their exercise as long as it's not done in too warm weather but would fit into your exercise requirement time, do have a number of health issues but not as many as bulldogs - health tested is a necessity if you go for this breed, again not much grooming needed, not exactly number 1 on most trainable breeds but not difficult either

Chihuahuas - need a lot of exercise for such a small dog, don't let the handbag size fool you - if they dont get the correct exercise and training they can be horrid snappy little things and either dominant or fearful. They suffer less with health problems but do have eye issues, very intelligent and easily taught in both obedience and agility, short coats need little grooming but long coats considerably more so, they can be very yappy

Pomeranians - a generally healthy breed, again needing more exercise than their size would suggest, they are a big dog in a small package and can be yappy, they are also very intelligent and easily trained, they need a lot of grooming!!

Hope this helps :)

No health issues so far, fingers crossed!
However he is mental! A very energetic puppy, he's wearing me out! Haha

Omg I am going to eat your puppy :-) , I have decided French as the mister doesn't want something fluffy :-( Haha. I now need to decide on standard colours or the not recognized as I won't be showing colour is not a big deal but personally I do like the lemon and white or any of the pieds will be another 2months before I buy need to find a good breeder and get my new house first and the the puppy toys :-) so if anyone knows of good breeders in lancashire let me know thanks for you help

You need to find a breeder asap and get on a list.

Most breeders have a list for puppies - some people wait years for specific lines - but for a pet puppy expect to register an interest before birth.
Occasionally a non standard colour turns up in a well bred litter but if someone is breeding for non standard colours run away.
Also beware of cheap imports from Eastern Europe. Puppy farmers have unfortunately latched on to Frenchies as an easy earner.
I do know a couple of good breeders in Lincolnshire.

As above!!

DO NOT buy from anyone advertising non-standard colours!

Frenchies come in brindle, pied (more white than brindle), and fawn.

Other colours can only be achieved by crossbreeding somewhere along the line or breeding from the undesirable colours that will occasionally crop up in a litter. They are undesirable as often they have health implications attached to the gene that causes these colours. People that breed these colours deliberately do so for financial gain and do not have the health/welfare of the breed in general at heart!

Right thank you for that because I had a lot of different advice with the non standard colours I will be staying away thought people was supposed to be improving the breed not playing god with new colours. I have got a breeders list from the website thread so thanks for that also I am in no rush so don't mind waiting x
