Some of you may remember my old pony, Harry. We bought him to hunt and he was amazing! I have never had so much fun with a pony/horse, however he was a little sh1tbag. When we bought him he had been showjumped up to a high level at a young age, and became totally backward thinking. He would buck ALOT, like proper bronco bucks until I fell off (which I did, alot of times!). It took a while but I got him going sweetly again and he would pop round a 3ft class happily, and was ace at xcountry/hunting (where he could go and gallop and not be held back).
We sold him a couple of years ago- the people who bought him absolutely fell in love with him as he was cheap, and we had got him going really well, so they thought he was a bargain, even though we explained again and again about his problems.
Needless to say they ignored our warnings and bought him anyway, and yes- they have had problems. He has gone back to his old ways (all my hardwork been undone!), and has been stood in a field all year doing nothing as they are scared of him and definitely wouldn't be able to sell him.
We see his owners quite regularly at shows (she has a new pony now!), and basically the situation of us buying him back (for peanuts!) arose.
We have a spare stable and enough grazing for him. He was a fun little horse and it means I can go hunting next season and have something to play with through the summer while I compete Queenie.
Is it a bad idea or not? He would probably be stuck with us for life if we did buy him back, but that's not a problem as would love a horse to play with when I come home from uni etc, and mum loved riding him too.
He is about 10 now, and 148cm.
Don't know if it is a really stupid thing to even consider, what with the credit crunch- shavings are so expensive now, but he could live out (he is a hardy welsh sec D). Wouldn't even need much hard food (it just sends him bonkers!).

What do you think? Stupid idea? Good idea? Hmm..

Here are some pics

I would defo buy him back esp if they basically want to give him back to you.
You have the land and I would want to make sure he's not sold from piller to post.
He must have such a boring life now compared to how he competed xc when you had him!
Go for it

i would buy him back if its no inconvenience to you (money, stabling, grazing etc) it will be fun for you to bring him back to work and trust you again, and then hunt in the winter

go for it! xx

I think looking back through my old photos of him have just made me want him back even more!

We are often saying, "I wish we still had Harry!" but never thought about it as being a viable thing to do. They haven't actually told us how much they would sell him back to us for, so I guess that is the next thing to find out.

Especially now that spring is creeping in and the nights are getting longer.
And plus it would stop Queenie getting upset when my sister takes her horse away to be ridden.

Oh wow this is getting exciting! Thanks everyone for your opinions, will talk it through with parents

Sounds like you've got enough space & time to have him back & if they only want peanuts for him thats even better! Ponies are fun & it'd probably be much nicer for him to be back with you. Go for it!

Buy him back. If you needed to once you have got him back you could always consider loaning him locally but being very very picky about who could loan him. But I don't think I would have second thoughts if he was my pony. Oh wait I just never sold my ponies just loaned them from home and still have them

I'm probably the only the person that would say no - don't buy him back.

Why did you sell him? Have things changed?

You sold him 'cheap' (from your original post) - why?

I think you're being sentimental - and I don't think there's much room for that. It's not a popular opinion (obviously) but it's an opinion.

Well we bought him because my other pony at the time wasn't suitable for hunting, and I was desperate to go hunting! He was for sale at the time for not very much at all, and was perfect for what we wanted.
We sold him because I had sold my other pony and bought Tara, who was an expert at hunting, and I didn't need two hunters. We sold him for cheap because we bought him for cheap- didn't buy him to make money on, we bought him to have fun on.

And yes things have changed- my new horse wont hunt (we tried, and failed!)!
