Why is it that when people buy a horse they always claim the previous owner was useless/bad/stupid etc and that they are soley responsible for any of the horses achievements. eg "when we got it it wouldn't jump a thing", "they said she bucked but we haven't had any problem", "We think his last owner must have pushed him too hard" you get the idea

I know sometimes there is truth in what people say but i have never heard anyone say "he did really well with his last owner"

Sorry pointless post just something that keeps coming up lately

Well my horse won a hunter trial with her previous owner, but her flatowork and jumping have improved since I got her. Just because she went round a pairs hunter trial with a horse leading her over the fences, doesn't mean she hasn't got a load better since I got her. She didn't load and was awful to clip when I got her... she does both perfectly now, and I want to take credit for the loading as I spent 3 months doing it thanks!!

I think people like to make a mark on a horse, and the majority of horses will keep improving too. There aren't many ready made perfect horses out there really.

Maybe because if the horse was perfect for its old owner, they would never have sold it?

Surely thats the whole point of buying and selling horses - that the horse should end up somewhere where it does better because its in a more suitable home, whatever the reason for that may be.

Daisy's last owner sold her admitting that she was a novice who had completely overhorsed herself. Pretty much everything that D does which is good is down to me, I'm also responsible for the crummy bits as well but I do know that what she is is almost completely a reflection of me and the way I ride her.

I admit i do it too both my horses hated their last owners they really did but sometimes i hear people talking about horses i know did really well before and they're taking all the credit for it. It's just one of those human/horse folk nature things i think

I've been hearing alot of bsja pony parents bitching though and in their case the ponies are only sold cos the kids grow

Me and the last owner of my boy are friends. I think she did a great job with him considering the small ammount of free time she has. He is as near to bombproof you can get as he was originally bought for a disabled man to learn to ride on(except around flower planters...wierd horse. His version of spooking is giving the scary object MASSIVE evils) He will let you do anything with him - all those things kids do with their ponies like platting up their mane, spending hours grooming them to make them look pretty and dressing them up, yup he lets you do that! Just gives you a look like you are a bit of a wierdo... And as for his breaks, well they are second to none. He just needs a bit more time spent on him really which she didn't have,a bit of schooling and a bit of getting out there and getting some experience. (Hunter trials here we come soon fingers crossed!) I think my boys last owner did a first class job with him all things considered.

My older mare did well at pony club level and showing so i can say yes she had a good start, but had done too much too young hence her breaking at 5!

My younger mare def had someone rough break her in (know that she was fine with her breeder as i am in contact with her but after that who knows) she has a very negative ungenuine streak to her sometimes, especially with people.

well when my 9 yo gelding came, someone had given him good basic schooling as a baby, then we think he has been through a series of numpty owners. When I got him, couldnt do a dressage test, never been round a course of sj, never been xc (except hunting), so horsie definatly has improved with me!

Our new horse was taught to jump as is great little sj but her schooling isnt great as she wasnt interested in schooling.Thats all ok as I enjoy schooling and my daughter enjoys sj.We have best of both worlds and old owner comes to watch my daughter jump her.Im happy to say old owner did brilliantly with sj.

All the horses I have bought came from excellent homes.
However, one of the horses I sold, I did rather well on, but he lost his confidence with his new owner. I was rather upset when she told me she thought he was dishonest and had a dirty stop. Had to tell her he only stopped if not ridden rigtht!

Tbh, my horse the previous hadn't done much with her but they gave her an ok start and she had a good life, being out in a 4o acre field and only brought in once a fortnight for a poddle round the block - not a bad life at all!
