My vet will give me a prescription to buy Bute online etc but he will charge me £9.00 for the prescription.
So, where is the cheapest place to buy it or does it work out just as cheap to buy it off the vet once you have paid the prescription charge ??

Thanks in advance

we have long term bute for one of our oldies.
orginally we used to buy it online but with our new vets they were willing to match the price of website (cant remember the site at the mo but it was bout £32-33) so we didnt hav the prescription charge & got cheap bute! might be worth having a chat with your vet!

Please be careful if ordering online. Any place that sells without a prescription is selling it illegally, and will almost certainly be made is such countries as Russia, where the ingredients are not always what they seem!

You shouldn't buy horse drugs without prescription for the same reason as human drugs which has been all over the news recently! generally don't contain the active ingredient and can contain some utter rubbish

www.hyperdrug.co.uk are a proper pharmacy and brilliant, give them a call and they'll be able to help

you then send them the prescription.

Having looked at vetorder and knowing a fair bit about vet medicines i the US (names, differences from UK in licencing etc), many of those names are not familiar. They may be generic, but when sold by a company whose merits are unknown, I would steer clear of the generics (not least because they are unlicensed in the UK.
Some of the products such as Danilon are the sae ones as available in the UK - but importation without prescription (and the subsequent use of the drugs) is illegal.

ETS - Ive just realised its selling Australian products...

I'm glad a few people have said it is illegal to buy bute without prescription, I always thought it was but this thread had me wondering. In view of the recent warnings about buying human drugs on line I really don't think I would risk it. I like to keep bute in as our Cushingoid pony often has lami flare ups, but I just ask my vet when I see them for something else and they will give me some without a prescription charge as long as they have seen her within past 6 months, which they usually have

I agree that the quality of the product may be suspect if bought from an unknown internet pharmacy offering cheap prescription only drugs without a prescription. However I believe that the breach in the law is for the distribution not the buying and it is the internet pharmacy that would be at prosecuted not the purchaser. I know that this is semantics but just in case someone is worried about breaking the law. There have been a number of distributors prosecuted in the UK but no purchasers that I am aware of.

I'd never buy bute online - really isn't worth the risk!

I get mine for either 25p or 50p a sachet(it's been that long I can't remember!) from the vet. ..

Ooo yeah please don't buy drugs without a prescription from internet companies. For wormers you have to be even more careful as no prescription required although company should be registered with the VMD (veterinary medicines directorate). Look out for this on any internet company you use. There have been instances where the VMD have investigated wormers purchased from an irish internet company, and they contained (guess what), toothpaste, of all things. be very careful indeed.

I do not disagree that ordering online without prescription is a risk.

However, as far as vetorder.com is concerned, everything that I have ordered from them has worked exactly as the stuff I have had from my vet did. The stuff that arrives in general is not "generic", it is branded, just not necessarily with brands that we recognise. Of course there is nothing to stop them supplying fakes, but so far they haven't supplied me with any, the results are conclusive on that.

I can't understand what problems anyone has with ordering wormers. There are a small number of chemicals used, they are listed on the box, and if you buy mail order from a reputable Australian pet supplier, where a lot of vet meds are produced anyway, they are half the price. I pay about £5 a shot for Razor ivermectin/praziquantel, including shipping from Aus. Eqvalan duo, identical chemicals, is at least £14. A big benefit of Razor for large horse users is that the syringe contains a 1200 kg dose, so you don't have to do a 700kg horse with two syringes.

I have no desire to encourage people to be foolish (though I do realise that there are foolish people out there who will "self-diagnose" and treat their horses with the wrong things). I think most people car too pmuch for their animals to be too stupid. But for repeat medications and wormers we are well and truly ripped off in this country and using the power of internet buying will be the only way to stop it.
