I'm thinking of going to the market on Saturday to maybe buy a little pony, never done it before so perhaps some really daft questions:

Do you have to register first?

Do you just stick your hand up to bid ?

Do you bid in pounds or guinea's?

Do you pay a tax on top of successful bids?

How do you pay cash , card etc.

I know when I have gone to look at the tack, the auctioneer rattles on and tbh I can't really understand what he's saying or indeed the price the item is at already.

Don't want to buy something at silly money, or make myself look a prize idiot.

Why not ring the auctioneers and ask?? Ive only brought tack from Derby.
Eaton and Hollis they have been very helpful when ive rang them in the past.

As always sound advice

I want to go but I daren't. Also looking for small pony companion type if anyone knows of anything...

If you really want any advice the best I can give you is DONT GO. I brought a throughbred mare from there about 2 years ago and it was a nightmare as well as heartbreaking. I eventually rehomed her as a companion and was about £1500 lighter for my troubles. There are lots of ponies around from genuine owners.
But if you do go you dont have to register, you just put your hand up and bid and its usually in pounds. Beware of buying outside the sale, at least then you have some comeback and a receipt if it turns out to be stolen. They have been known to sell horses without passports or issue passports on the day - steer well away from those. Oh and look out where you put your car and trailer as when I drove past there yesterday the gypsies were still in occupation.....

You dont have to register, all you do is stick up your hand and maybe say "here" to get the auctioneers attention. The bidding is done in guinea's so when going to pay which last time i bought from there was cash only, remember a guinea is £1.05.
