buying from Malvern sports horse sales ???

Hi

I haven't bought a horse from Malvern (got my girl from Leominster) but have been there. From what I remember they have classes there so that you can see them being ridden, jumped etc. I rode a horse I was interested in buying in the practice ring where there were a couple of jumps set up, although it can get a bit busy in there.

Vettings can easily be arranged onsite & I understand that they are done professionally as several horses failed their vettings whilst I was there (I know this because my previous vet (before I relocated to Wales) did some of the vettings & he told me afterwards).

I bought a horse from the malvern sales and he has turned out exactly as I wanted. The process is easy and quick and far far safer than buying through a dealer or privately as long as you buy through the ring and not outside. You will be asked if you want a vetting and you can have blood tests as well. Any vices have to be declared and horses cannot go to the sales without a passport. As a purchaser you have 48 hours to spin the horse if it is not as described and the auctioneer acts as the intermediary - so no agressive sellers to deal with if it goes wrong. I would certainly buy a horse from there again as both mine were exactly as described and I had loads in one place to choose from. they are also in almost a competition environment so you can see how they cope away from home.

I went to buy a youngster, I bought a 3 year old WB xTB. He was halter broken only. They run competitions in the morning before the sale so you can see them competing - I saw my chap in hand only but other classes were jumping over a variety of heights. You can then ride them over jumps, or see them loose schooled or lunged. I also bought a 4 year old just backed who we saw loose jumped and hacked around.

I had the 3 year old vetted but as not under saddle and not able to lunge I had a 2 stage vetting only. The 4 year old was lunged as no rider with the owner and we had a full 5 stage vetting. Extremely thorough and it showed he had a heart murmer. The vet came and saw us and advised us that he though the murmur could be as a result of a viral challenge as the horse had only had its injections the day before. He stated that in his opinion it was the best horse he had vetted at the sale and suggested we negotiate with the owner to pull out of the auction sale as he had failed a vetting, get the owner to take him home for 2 weeks and us get a second vetting done at the owners cost once the viral challenge had had a chance to go. I could not fault the vet for his detailed vetting.

I have bought several the grey in my signature I bought as a 3 yr old just sat on. You can go and look at a lot all in one place , how often have we all travelled miles to look at just one horse that was not as advertised. The facilities are first class, and vetting very good.

ok that's absolutely great Am I likely to get a good horse for Max of £3000 including any charges??

how do you know from the catalogue what is likely to be in your price range as I like what I can't afford lol I'm likely to get it totally wrong

ps really does sound the way to go if I haven't found one locally by then as am not prepared at the moment to keep traveling the distances I have been doing!!

That is the problem with sales - sometimes it is really hard to know which will be in your price bracket! I have been disappointed a few times but also pleasnatly surprised a coupke of times
