I'm going to be looking for a 3 year old welsh C filly this year, been advised to go to the welsh sales (I assume in wales :D) Have always bought ponies privately and would never usually touch an auction. Just wondered what its like buying there and whether I do have a good chance of picking up something nice? Friend raves about them but I'm a bit far away and don't know anyone who has gone. Thank you :D

I presume your friend means the cob sales at Builth Wells in october? You should get a good choice of Cs, have a look on Brightwells site for past prices etc.
I have bought section As at fayre Oaks the equivalent for the As & Bs, its great being able to see so many of similar age etc to choose from, also a very sociable weekend :)
These sales are extremely well run, with great conditions, knowledgeable staff etc.
This website also has pictures and sales reports

Builth Sales are very trustworthy. It normally has the best breeders there selling stock and very good facilities. Prices will be rock bottom this year and the next one is may. Also if you stay for the week, its has a fab social nightlife

Either the May or October sales are good, the one in October offers widest choice as it is a bigger sale (obviousely lol!) Buy a catalogue in advance and have a good lok through, there also links to stud websites in the blurb which is helpful.

Do your research, see what lines are winning and then check the catalogue and see if the lines are in the sale. Check the ponies showing history, contact the breeders. Ask an independant experienced person to give an honest opinion, especially if you are going to show the pony. Fashions change , you cant change fashion, but type is always consistant, go type, size, and flashy, cant beat flashy - they say a good horse is never a bad colour but a good flashy one always catches the eye. good luck - have you not tried private studs ?

Or you could always try going direct to the breeders themselves rather than wait for the sales, i know of several good C breeders, make a weekend of it & visit several studs while your down this way. You have all the big names here, Horeb, Nebo, Menai & Synod for starters, but there are other studs that arent so big that are worth a visit, a friend of mine owns Parc y Bedw stud & his horses are lovely. Honestly living down in here is like being in welshie heaven....sadly you see so many of them down here the novelty wears off after a while lol!

Tell me about it!! You could always try Yarty stud in Carmarthen. I got my C from there and a few friends have also brought from them. They all tend to be a bit fiery but I brought my mare last year as an unhandled 3YO and she is unbeaten to date

Agree, do your research and make sure you know what you are looking at. My instructors go most years and come back with some absolute gems.
Trustworthy, well run, good facilities, good breeders with some well bred horses.

Brightwell Sales, Builth Wells. Excellent venue and very well run sales. I buy there. I've bought some really super stock. Google "Brightwells" and give them a ring well in advance and the lady in the office will be able to talk you through the process.

Thanks so much for all the replies, thats all so helpful. I hadn't thought about buying from studs actually. I have quite a strict list of requirements for said filly, top of which is character/temperament so a stud might be better.. I guess the price will be a lot higher though..? I think I will post back nearer the time to get some stud info, and also further advice on what to look for at a sale as I've never been to one before. I am a few months off buying at the moment. Pony is to replace my forever pony, who was pts a few years ago. I think I am finally ready to look for another one who I will hopefully fall in love with as much as my last. I still miss her but she showed me what a super breed the welsh c's are, and also what a great bond you can have with a mare :D

Not necessarily, look at if from the studs perspective, no entry fees, not time wasted taking a pony that might not sell, plus some studs don't even bother with Builth due to the cost & prices being so dire at the moment. Can i just point you in the direction of Saddlesoap, put this post on there, its a predominantly Welshie forum & they will most definitely point you in the right direction :)

Hopping over there now - thanks :D

Hello :)

I went to the Ruthin Welsh sale in September 2008, we never went with the intention to buy.
At the end of the auction I seen the most gorgeous lil chunky foal, I said to my mum "look at that foal, what a lil chunky monkey" and she said "thats the one that i was trying to get your attention about at the auction ring", i must of been looking at another horse outside and didnt notice the lil foal that my mum tried to show me.
So at the end of the auction when id seen the foal, we walked over to the man who was stood next to the foal, he said that he had just bought him but we could buy him off him for the same price that he had paid for him and that for abit extra he would drop him off at our field :)

We ended up buying the cute lil 6month old chestnut welsh section d colt and i called him Harley. It was one of the best days of my life buying him and we've still got him :) He will be turning 3 years old in April :)

I got in touch with his breeder a couple of weeks after we bought him, shes lovely, i know about his mum, dad etc. We went to meet her last year and we met Harley's mum and half sister. It was lovely to meet his old owner and we stay in touch :)
