After my 9th private lesson, I was given a whip to use when Blarney is being lazy. Of course I do not use it excessively!!

Anyway, I would like to buy one, but when I saw online, there are many different whips.... I am not sure which to pick !!

Sparkly pink are my favourite. Seriously though, I would try to get to a tack shop where they have a selection so you can see the different types and weght/thickness.

As a beginner I would look for an all purpose whip. These are a bit longer than a jumping whip but not as long as a dressage or schooling whip.

Look for one with a handle with a knob on the end so it doesn't slide out of your hand. You will find various thicknesses of handle and some will be grippy too, this is a matter of personal preference.

Many will have a loop on them, these should not be put around your wrist while you ride as they can cause injuries. Many riding schools cut them off if they see them.

As a result of years of riding in riding schools I would suggest getting a cheap one in a really obnoxious colour as they are really easy to lose and are often "borrowed". You are far more likely to get a lime green whip back than a black one.

If you can get to a shop then do it, I find there’s a lot of difference in the feel and balance (especially in schooling whips which I know you probably won’t be getting).
I cut off the loop on my short whip and after my expensive schooling whip went ‘walkies’ at the riding school I bought a cheaper one, printed my name on paper and cellotaped it firmly just below the handle.
