Buying horse with known issues?

All the polo ponies I worked with when I groomed were rehomed once they were too broken to play anymore, which is an impressive feat to get to as many were double buted daily. I rehomed one as he was injured (80% check ligament tear) and the argie pro had advised the owner to "have the groom bandage the leg tighter and keep playing". I couldn't bear him to go back to that so I spent a small fortune rehabbing him and getting over all the behavioural issues he'd picked up from all the pain and abuse he suffered. He's safe now but I wouldn't knowingly take on another, from that club at least.
