Buying Horses from Slaughter

Who needs help more though, a horse that's in rehab and has been cared for, or, a horse with no positive connection with anything and only knows negativity?

The horse that's in rehab. The other is going to meet a swift end via a bullet.

However, op, if you do want to buy one to prevent it going to slaughter, all you have to do is go to market and bid against the meat man.

As I've said, that's probably what I'm going to do.

Thanks everyone that's given useful advice and not got all sassy about this! To everyone saying "Ooh are you doing it just so you can say 'look I got this horse from the meat man'" and "there's a reason they're in there" getting their knickers in a twist and nit picking- no. Have you ever heard the quote "You don't throw a whole life away just because he's banged up a little."? I want to get a horse from slaughter/from a bad state so that I can help the horse. It doesn't need to fulfil any ambitions or go onto amazing things as I have other horses.
To everyone saying I should get one from a rescue: If I get one from a rescue, the horse I would have got otherwise from meat will still be slaughtered, however if I buy from meat the horse I would have got from a rescue will simply stay in the program a bit longer until someone else adopts it. I do like the idea of the Irish horse rescue project though!

Looks like I'll probably go to a few auctions!

i have exactly the same mindset and situation as you. Reason I didn't go to auction was because i felt i was encouraging the whole industry by giving it cash. In my head I give auction seller cash, and they go off and replace it with another pony as there's cash to be had. That pony would have come from someone who sold cheap for cash, and then probably goes off to get some more horses because, wa-hey he's got CASH now. I prefer to step out of that cycle completely and catch them at the end when there's no body benefiting apart from the horse.

I was much happier to go to the Irish Horse Rehoming Project and get a horse who would have got the bullet that week otherwise. The horses she picks are often fairly young and unhandled. But one of mine is an ex sulky racer who was extremely badly treated. It's been so rewarding to see it develop into a super horse and i'm enjoying retraining it. She has youngsters who have been born in foster with her too. She doesn't have the facilities for retraining and assessing for riding, so she really needs experienced owners.

A horse with no positive connection with anything and only knows negativity that is impounded after being dumped and is shot because the local rescue is full and can't take it? The rescue centres are not a never-ending resource.

Please, please, please if you will be living in Mayo and have the space and desire to take on a youngster that may have issues due to a poor start in life do approach Hungry Horse Outside https://www.facebook.com/Hungryhors...8430455247598/948429825247661/?type=3&theater.

ETA - I have a pony from them and went down to their yard to meet him, so I know what an amazing and totally overworked group of volunteers they are. They keep the horses and train them because that is what they have to do to find them a good home, if you want to take on a yearling at an earlier stage in the process I really doubt they will argue with you over that!

The horse waiting for a space in rehab is the one that needs help most. You will do the most good by taking one that a rescue wants to move to a new home. Even better if you can then turn it into a useful animal, find it a purpose, and then take on another from the rescue to make room for another pool soul.
