Buying horses - how long to sort out insurance?

Well, I've had numerous loans and shares but never actually bought my own before.
So when buying a horse, how long does it take to set up a new insurance policy?

I was hoping to make sure the horse was fully covered even before we brought him home but it won't be practical if these things take two weeks to settle out. So any advice? Do you wait for the horse to come home then sort everything out or set up insurance before you've actually bought them?

I'm mighty confused :confused:
 
I've always found they are just like car insurance and you can set up cover immediately over the phone. Only takes about 10 mins and very painless. Aslong as you have all relevant information its no problem. It might take longer if they need you to send your vetting certificate but normally they are happy for you to send that later.

I've phoned NFU from the horsebox, on the way to pick up the horse, and arranged cover so that the horse was covered for the drive home. You will need your vets to fax them the vetting certificate though :)
 
Its immediate and you have a period of grace to send on the vets certificate. However all insurance companies have a 2 week period where they will not cover you for something that could have been pre existing so its worth clarifying that i,e if your horse developed kissing spines the day after you got it home, it would not be covered if you claimed before the initial 2 week period was up, Bit of an extreme example but just to give you an idea. Worth ringing around first as the quotes vary hugely.

So am I right that they won't cover previous injuries but say if he injured himself in the field a couple of days after bringing him home, would that be exempt too?

This^^

I'm with the NFU also. You only need to send them a vetting cert of you want to insure your horse for £5k or above.

I had my boy insured before he was on the wagon :)
 
MY pony i left her down in wales till insurance kicked in 2 weeks later.

I have now canceled my insurance and put the money in an account .
