Ive seen a horse I really like with a reputable dealer. Ive seen the horse with my mum who isnt very horsey. I contacted an instructor who said hack the horse out and he will come and view on 3rd viewing. Dealers are happy with that but Im serious about buying and dont want to mess them around. There are other people interested but Ive got first dibs. Should I say Im really interested on 2nd viewing put a deposit down and arrange vetting, but Im anxious about getting it right this time and really Id like my instructor/experienced horseperson to come and view with me. Or just put a deposit down on 2nd viewing? What should I do??

Don't rush it, but I would see if the instructor will come out for the second viewing. Good reputable dealers are used to these kind of viewing arrangements and shouldn't feel messed around as long as you are open with them. With all horse purchasing there will be other buyers (whether real or fictional).

Other advise would make sure if you do decide (which I wouldn't) to rush in and put down the deposit make sure it is subject to vetting.

Good luck ! :D

Can you not explain to your instructor that you're really worried on missing out if you leave it too long and asking if they'll pretty please come to the second viewing? Take the money for a deposit along with you so you can hand it over if your instructor likes the horse too. I've been following your search and know it's been taking a while - I really hope this one works out for you. :)

Instructor said he'd come out for a 3rd viewing. I must make sure this horse is the one he said. Ive contacted other instructors who are all too busy to come with me.

If your instructor won't come to the 2nd viewing and all the other instructors you've contacted are busy do you have an experienced friend you could take along? How about the YO at the yard where you'll be keeping the horse?

Hi Pleased you have found a horsey keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Im sure if you explain then the dealer will be fine with this and by visiting 3 times gives you an opportunity to see the horse several times in differing circumstances conditions etc

Good luck let me know how you get on id be interested to know the dealer PM me!!

K xx

If you really like it then tbh I would go ahead and get it vetted. If it is ok to ride then the vet can tell you the rest IMO. I never take my instructor along as the horse is for me not her! It is her job to sort us out!:)

I quite agree. If you have hacked it and handled it and got satisfactory answers to all the relevant questions then get it vetted asap. Unfortunately if you leave it too long and someone else rocks up, wants it and pays for it there and then you will lose out.

Yep I agree too. And excuse me if I sound rude but why do people take their instructors along to look at horses? who's going to be riding and looking after the horse? It is always a risk buying a horse, and go with your instinct.

Thanks everyone. Your advice is appreciated. Ive not hacked him out yet going to do that on 2nd visit. Im just scared of making the same mistakes that Ive made in the past. I need to ask a few more questions as well. Also all being well, he is the one what do I do re deposits or do not all sellers require deposits?

depends on the seller but i would take cash with you and get a written receipt confirming you have piad the deposit for the sale of the horse pending a passed vetting.

If you don't leave a deposit, you run the risk of the horse being sold to someone else. Look at another thread on here...

As you have been looking for so long (at least 6 or so months if I remember correctly?) - I'd leave a deposit. You will be more gutted if this dealer sold this horse to somebody else and you would be left thinking 'what if'. A couple of hundred pounds is not a lot to potentially secure a horse that will make you happy.

Leave a deposit you can afford to loose, get written receipt stating the amount, the agreed purchase price, description of horse & its passport name.

Do take your instructors opinion with open eyes. I have known a less than scrupulous one get owner to buy an unsuitable horse so they could buy it off them later at a reduced price, and another so the pupil would give them the unmanegable horse they had by then fallen in love with by then to ride/compete, so they got good animal with all bills paid for them.

Right I will do that re deposits & getting someone to come with me. I dont think instructor would come with me on 2nd viewing after what he said. So back to the drawing board.
