I have just got some money and I am going to spend it on a nice horse to do dressage. Hubby has gone very quiet - bad sign.

However - park hubby. All the horses I see are £10000 and upwards - and they are all young. someone who used to teach me says I should not buy a young horse - so easy to make a mistake.

Just wondered what sort of price you should pay for a horse with good movement and GOOD temperament. Prefer littler horses - max 16hh / 16.1hh maybe. 15.1 hh is good.

Mare / gelding / colour immaterial.

what do people think?

Sue

What level of dressage do you want to do and what type of horses are you looking for?

If you have got the help of a good trainer I don't see why you shouldn't get a young horse - they are so much more rewarding!

For a 15.1hh? Not the most sought-after size so I would think you could easily pick a decent one up for under £5K. Just look for Riding Club types - there are normally loads around the £2,500 - £3,500 bracket.

It depends what level you are looking for...

If you want a nice dresage horse that is out competing unaffiliated but no BD points, then I would say no more than £6000 in my opinion. However, if you want something with BD points then you are talking quite a bit more.

Thx for the advice everyone. I competed at elementary before and I would love to get up to medium - half pass and changes and all that.

I think if I get a youngster then I can wave all that goodbye cos I shall have popped my clogs before I ever get him / her to that level.

However there are other compensations and older ones at that sort of level (medium) in my budget are usually 13 or 14. So a worry from insuring point of view - lameness / health etc.

I have been looking at spanish horses - I just love the way they peep out from under all that hair.

I have been told that Trakehners are tricky and to be avoided.

so keeping looking.

Quote "I have been told that Trakehners are tricky and to be avoided". That could be because they have a brain like Arabs & senstive like TB's. Any horse with correct schooling/riding should get to medium level.
