.... seems to be as stressful as buying a house, lol!

Searching for a used 3.5 ton lorry and I thought I'd found my perfect one, right sort of price, a bit tatty but started first time (cold engine too!). Had an MOT so thought I was covered, had a few advisories but nothing that couldn't be sorted out.

After reading various threads on here and taking on board others' experiences I got a horsebox mechanic out to have a look anyway and he basically said it wasn't worth half of what they were asking due to the amount of work needed :(

I did make an offer (over the odds I hasten to add!) but it was still refused then they told me they had a full asking price offer and had sold it.

It's pretty scary to think that just because it has an MOT, people assume that it's safe to transport horses but I'm beginning to find out that isn't always the case. It really is buyer's beware isn't it? But if there's one thing I've learned so far it's always to get it checked professionally before committing!

So the search continues.......! :)

Indeed! Just be glad you had the sense to get it properly checked out before purchasing :o

I've never bought a lorry and am still in the "saving up" stage  but you can bet your bottom dollar when I start looking seriously I want a decent lorry mechanic looking over it for me!!

Absolutely!..... I was in the "It's got an MOT, it's fine" camp but reading people's experiences on here certainly changed my view. So thank you everyone for sharing those experiences! People really do take notice of advice given! :D

Out of interest, what issues did the mechanic pick up on that you wouldn't have been able to see yourself? Just curious really - was it flooring problems or anything like that? It is quite worrying. We bought a lorry, to replace our old one, 4 years ago and that looked in pretty good nick plus our dad is fairly good at checking the important areas (he's no mechanic, just knows about vehicles I guess) so he gives it a bit of an 'inspection' as it were. It is a concern that people can and do buy them without maybe being aware of potential problems!
