Buying own clippers vs paying someone to clip

I don't have mains electricity at the yard so clippers would have to be battery operated.

Been looking at battery powered clippers on eBay and some 2nd hand ones for £100 ish.

I've never clipped before but have watched plenty of times and know what to do.

The horses would have hunter (square patch) and half head. This is what they always have and it works well for them.

What would you do? Buy own clippers or pay someone to do them?

Both horses are fab to clip :)
 
Well, if I were you I think I would buy my own. With 2 horses to clip you will 'get your money' back quicker than if you just had 1 horse and it means you can clip as often as you need without worrying it is going to cost you more to get someone else out.

I've just bought my own battery clippers and clipped my horse, someone clipped her last year so I knew she would be okay. It was the first time I had clipped a horse.

Go for it, it should save you money in the long run and is more convenient.
 
I think buying your own is much easier, espeically if you end up clipping 3/4 times a season.
You need some good proper clippers if your going to do full, which are about 200 I think, roughly, obviously depending on make! Don't fall into the trap of getting some cheaper ones as itll make your life a lot harder!
A friend of mine clips- a full horse for £25/£30 depending on hariness/time, which i think works out cheaper short term, but if youre planning on clipping again next year and so on, buy your own.

Also, if you buy a decent pair, you'll still have them years later, I don't know how old my dads are, but they're proper heavy duty ones, forever using them and they are still in good cond.
 
Personally I bought my own as I don't mind clipping (and resent paying someone to do something I am quite capable of) and it means that if I want them done I can just get on and do it without having make arrangements with another person. I bought Moser Avalons about 5 years ago and have been really pleased with them. I currently have a Fell and a New Forest and they cope with their coats absolutely fine. I recently lent them to a friend who does a lot of clipping to do another friend's horse (no electricity at yard and she only has mains clippers) and she was really impressed with them.
 
I have some Liveryman Eelement small cordless clippers, and do my hairy cob with them. They run for an hour on one charge and I can do a trace in that time, with the 3mm guard on as they scalp her without it, she was black and pink, not piebald, on her neck for 2 weeks the first time I did a bib with them, lol! (I have done a full clip with them over 2 days, charging overnight). They were only about £65, and I love them, as I have to do my mares legs about once a month!
 
I cheated last year and had mine clipped once, then bought clippers so I could then re-clip while the lines were still there, so I didn't mess it up!

This year I've been bold and just went for it - hence the dodgy saddle patch!!!
 
I'm also looking for some cordless clippers to do one horse with a fairly fine coat. Only planning to do a bib or a chaser.

Any suggestions for something cheap.
 
Buying your own will save money in the long term. I've had my Lister Mustangs for about 14 years, they're big and heavy but get through the yak like cob coat dead easy. I only use them for the first clip, then have cheaper, and lighter, Premiers for subsequent clipping. I've already done my second clip of the year, my friend was quoted £40 for hunter clip, so, I loaned her mine. Again, she's just had her second clip, saved £40 and I've had both sets of blades sharpened in return for clipper usage!
If you go for own clipper, I would recommend having a spare set of blades too. If your clippers get a bit warm, you'll have cool blades to change to do sensitive areas.
 
Hehe, yes poor girl was almost completely bald on her bib for about 2 weeks, lol. Luckily it was first clip of the season and it was still mild weather. I learned my lesson and bought some heavy duty Listers for proper clips after that mistake, and tend to just use the Element for her ankles or a little trace, lol x
 
Buy your own. I did and have already saved enough to warrent a second pair.

I have livery man harmony with wide blades have full clipped my boy and never been near running out of charge (they hold three hours). And bronco mains clippers my new toy!
