Hello. I’m on diy yard where we can buy hay/haylage from yard owner. Until now I thought we aren’t obligated to buy from yard owner until fellow livery brought hay from someone else and yo got bit funny about it, he wasn’t nasty just called her cheeky and I did hear him talking to other liveries about it. He’s absolutely fine if you get bagged haylage from feed shop for example Horsehage.
yo only supply meadow mixed with rye forage which isnt analised and isn’t suitable for ponies who suffer from chronic laminitis which is why fellow livery brought her own hay she bought from someone else which is Timothy hay. What’s your situation at the yard with hay, can you bring your own or do you have to buy from yo? What if your horses need’s require different types of hay that yard doesn’t supply?
thank you x

Where I stable my horse currently I buy YO's hay, not quite sure I would be allowed to buy my own (the question hasn't really come up though since I pay for as much as I take and the hay suits my horse). When I had my horse elsewhere I bought my own hay since the one the stable ( a riding school) offered was a. Sometimes the same haylage you could buy much cheaper directly from the farmer who supplied the haylage to the RS in the first place and at times b. wetter and with less protein than the said farmers hay. We usually got together a couple of us at the yard ans shared the big haylage bales and had a schedule for who's turn it was to contact the farmer for delivering and for paying ( each haylage roundbale had a weight of approximately 300-400 kg so sharing was better since we got through a bale of hay faster so it didn't turn bad) ☺

During winter (November to April) YO prefers we buy their hay/haylage (rocket fuel yummy stuff)in summer we can buy from them or elsewhere. I and a couple of other liveries buy in alternative hay year round for different reasons in addition to provided hay. In my case I buy in a softer less “rich” small bale hay which I mix into my daughters older mares nets…not sure of others reasons.

Current yard - doesn't have any hay/haylage/straw so everyone buys their own.
previous yard and one before - you were obliged to buy theirs, only exception bagged haylage.
yard before that we had to buy theirs but after I left hay was awful quality and liveries complained so were given permission to buy in.

If my horse needed specific hay I'd have a chat with YO that my horse needs x hence I need to buy y.

I've always bought directly from YO as the hay has always been good quality and suited my needs. The last yard I was on, if I'd needed to buy elsewhere for health reasons I'm sure the YO would have been fine with that, if I'd discussed before hand.
