I want to buy shavings in bulk, having perhaps a few pallet loads delivered at a time. Can anyone recommend a supplier & give me an idea of costs. It surely must be cheaper than the £7/bale I'm paying at the moment? I'm in Wales

There's an ad in the back of todays horse and hound for canadian shavings at £5.20 per bale. The website for them is www.colehay.co.uk i've ordered from them a few times and bought 3 pallets (36 bales per pallet).

Another option is to change to a cheaper type of bedding. I've just change one of my horses onto wood pellets because at £3.25 a bag they are much more cost effective. I've only had them in for a week but so far am impressed and considering changing all of the horses to them.

Hi
forgive my ignorance but arent those pellets in 10kg bags and shavings in 20kg bags or more? So really you are paying £6.50 and have tha hassle of watering them?

Yes you need to water the pellets and they are in a 10kg bags but they fluff up and expand so you wouldnt need to put in an equal weight (i.e 2 bags dry pellets to an equiv 1 bag shavings).

So far this week i've had to put 1 bag shavings in my mare's stable but no further pellets in my colt's stable. I would expect to need to put another shavings in for my mare midweek and at that point add just one bag pellets for my colt.

They are very different to shavings and i'm sure not everyone will get on with them but i like them so far and if i end up adding 1 bag pellets per week only then it works out as a big saving for me with more than 1 horse.

Remember that when you add water to the dry pellets to fluff them up that adds weight so one bag of 10kg dry pellets would be about the equiv of one bag already fluffy shavings.
