Buying Shavings in Bulk

Does anyone buy shavings in bulk?
Which make do you use?
How many do you have to buy at a time?
Is it worth it in the long run with saving costs?
Do you buy them direct from the manufacturer or do you have to go through an agent?

Thinking of stocking up!! Want to know best way about it xxx

Definately worth it if you have the storage space.

I used to buy by the pallet and found it worked out much cheeper in the long run.

No idea what make they were - whatever was the cheapest that the agricultural co. had.

I buy in bulk, no idea about the weight though. This lot was delivered yesterday, about 30' x 12' x 4' (I'll shunt it all backwards later when I can find the tractor key) , It cost me $150 direct from the lumbermill.
It will last me at least a year, but then my horses only stand in during the day during the summer and are out 24/7 otherwise.

Regular bales (from the same company as loose) cost $9.50 each, it's a no brainer.

Buying in bulk all depends on the storage you have though, obviously bales are tidier, easier to manage and take up less space.

We buy a couple of pallets while the prices are lower. They last me around 6 months normally and saves all the hassle of picking shavings up every couple of weeks. I get them from my feed merchants and they deliver as well.
We use Thoroughbred shavings.

Winchester - forget the shavings idea and go the wood pellets route!!!! I have switched and what a revelation. Gone from 2 big barrows of muck a day to 1/2 a small barrow. Dense tidy bed, cheap as chips, tiny bags, light weight bags. Small muck heap. Quicker to muck out. No dust. NO BAD POINTS AT ALL. Don't worry I don't work for a wood chip manufacturer. Complete unbiased opinion.
