Hi everyone! I'm new to the site, it's nice to meet you all. I'm basically asking for a little advice on the next horse I buy for my daughter. She is 14 years old and has been riding for 5 years, her last pony Pip is now sadly outgrown and was a brilliant confidence giver. My daughter has now taken an interest in showjumping and would ideally like to try some unaffiliated/possibly affiliated classes. I haven't got a huge budget (Around 2-3k) but obviously I want to buy the most suitable pony. Now, here is my dilemna! Do I buy something slightly older that will 'help' her out round the smaller courses or do I look for something slightly younger so the two of them can learn together?

As a slightly older horse I was looking at something like this...

And at the other end of the scale, something younger...

I spoke to the owner of the chestnut mare above and apparently she has raced just once as a 2 year old, although you wouldn't know it. Also, she is a very 'mature' 4 year old.

Can I have your opinions on the above or should I be looking at something completely different?

Thanks for your help!

a been there done that type definately, confidence is a precious thing and a more experienced horse will help her as she makes the transition into competing

Hi, welcome to the site.
If it was me I'd buy her something older because at that age its easy to have a confidence knock.
Also, sorry to be a nit picker but I'm pretty sure it's against the rules to post links to ads as it can be seen as advertising :)

Hello **waves** :D

My daughter grew out of her rescued pony when she was 12 & I made the decision to but her something that had been about a bit - best thing we ever did!!

She's now 16 & the pony we bought took her from jumping 75cm classes to affilliated 1.10m classes & she qualified & jumped at tons of national finals. Her confidence went through the roof with him too. He also gave her the bottle to do puissance classes (he's only 14hh) & she usually beats the horses - has been upto 1.60!! (Was so scary to watch!!)

I would go for a more experienced pony for your daughter - I've done the young pony too & although she loved it, she's had for more success & fun with the older boy.

Shame she's 16 & he has to go soon :( xx

Thanks for your replies guys! I was leaning towards something a little more experienced to be honest. Although I would love for her to form a 'bond' with something younger, I also think that having confidence is one of the most important things to consider. Maybe a youngster next time!

Thank you!

They still get that bond pretty quick with an older one - ours is my daughters best friend & he follows her round like a little puppy! I would say he knows her inside out as much as she knows him :D xx
