Buying youngsters?

Looking to buy a foal/ youngster this year (hopefully New Forest, if not possibly Welsh) not sure whether to go to sales or directly to a breeder or through private sale. Anyone got any advice or experience they could share? Thanks

I went for a 3 yo and bought direct from the breeder because I wanted to meet her mum (human and equine) and am glad I did.

Sales can give a bargain but I was too influenced by the Thelwell cartoon saying 'Never buy a horse from the sales' with a pic of the small girl leading the fat pony and behind the pony there is a set of 3 hoofprints and one wooden leg print......:-)))))
 
Thanks. The pony in my sig is now 7 and was £150 from the sales and is completely lovely. However I would like to 'meet the parents' so to speak! Although good point about the Thelwell thing

I've bought youngsters both from the sales and privately and never had any problems with either. Foresters from the Beaulieu Road sales are pretty genuine as most of them come straight off the Forest complete with gorse and brambles in their manes!! I have a friend who has about 40 NFs on the Forest if you'd like a Forest-bred youngster . . . . pretty reasonable . . . . . have a look on the NFED too, there's always plenty for sale on there

Both mine came from sales but u do have to be careful - my YO got a welsh pony from the round up and it was totally wild, never been handled or anything.
 
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've always wondered...

If you buy a youngster from the sales straight off the moor/mountain etc does it not have a real panic when you try and put it in a horsebox?

I've always had a dream of buying a young exmoor from the sales and keeping it to bring on but never sure how I'd get it home.
 
When YO got hers it took us nearly an hour to get the poor thing on board. Quite a few people took horses with them to act as lead horses and some people were drugging them. We eventally got GJ on by bribing him with food - I have to say it's an experience I don't want to go thru again!!
