I have booked into an organised ride in a few weeks. Never ever would I have thought I would do that. Today went out with the same 2 horses we are going with. Lots of rather forward cantering to practise. He is so good in that he dosnt fuss to be in front but he is very sure he won’t be left behind. And each time pulls himself up at the end of the field. But he makes sure it is the end of the field rather than being able to fit at least 10 more strides in which is better for my heart stopping distance.

Then we pointed up a hill and OMG I have never gone so fast on a horse before. I have let him go (when alone) and he has galloped before but this was in a different league. He kept up with the racehorse who was flat out. It was the most awesome amazing feeling and I want to go again! The best thing though he comes back to walk and walks along on a long rein (always forwards tho!) can go in another field and he carries on walking. Only when I think about going again does he go.

So for all nervous confidence issues it CAN get better.

Sounds incredible (apart from maybe the stopping a bit further towards the end of the field than planned)! My riding and/or confidence are not quite there yet but would love to be able to do a ride out like that. Hope the organised ride goes well :)

How lovely. We haven't got open fields to gallop in round here, just woodland tracks. I'd love to try that with Charlie. So far the brakes have been very responsive but I need to give them a good test to really have confidence in them!

What a fab post! One of my fondest memories of my first horse (ex racer) was a ride similar to yours; that feeling of exhilaration, the speed and power of a horse galloping as fast as they can. There’s nothing like it!
My current lad is also an ex racer but he’s completely different; he’s very brave and un-spooky but...
Slowest. Ex. Race. Horse. Ever.
We had a canter up a stubble field today and honestly he would have just dwindled to a halt if I hadn’t kept asking!
I hope you both have a lovely time at your organised ride too.
