Well Millie's debut 4yo BYEH today with v early times!! She's never done a dressage test and never been to a proper show - 2 training shows at Vale View indoors and then a hack round Chatsworth and Prestwold and 2 XC schools!! Its so exciting, our first homebred that we didn't even really want to breed grown up and going to shows!!!

She was a v good girl, we were actually quite suprised as she's been quite wild recently. Did a sweet test but got bored by the end so threw her head in the last 2 downward transitions to get 29. (out of 35). The leader after the dressage was on 33 so not terrible but can improve lots.

Jumping was up to height and quite square. They always use working hunter jumps at Rutland and some of them are v v rustic and quite spooky with LOTS of greenery then the odd SJ put in too! She jumped really well but had 1 off, number 3 - the back rail of an oxer. Number 2 had been v spooky so had to ridden a bit more to it, then she just got a bit quick afterwards. However not bad for a first attempt! First course outside and 3rd course in her life!! Got a v conservative 22 for jump but looking at the other marks it was the big bay TB event horses (yawwwwn) getting the top 35 marks although there were very few clear rounds. It was always going to be her problem, being little and a mare. Judges are now told they can't penalise size and mares but how long that will take to filter out I don't know!!

She trotted up well and got 9 for conformation and type so again not bad but not amazing!! Think its the 15.1hh pony mare hazard of entering these classes!!!

Didn't get into the top 10 but we were v pleased with how she went, great attitude, came out and did everything asked of her and these classes really are great education and if you do well you do well.......Its showing so therefore very subjective and you almost have to pick your judges.

Sarah Cohen won, on a horse already qualified and Hayley Rose 2nd on a horse alrady qualified so think it passed to 3rd which was Lauren Shannon although didn't go back to look at the scoreboard.

Looking forward to Bramham now, see how she goes next weekend!

Here's the pic -

I got there just in time to see your mare go I though she looked lovely. We had a very similar model last year by JP and despite not putting a foot wrong and jumping out of her skin she got very avarage marks at Milton Keynes. We have sold her now and she is doing very well with a Junior.
Rutland was a first outing for our new stallion, we were delighted with him, he did a lovely clear round but not what the judge wanted to see! But hay ho at least when compete properly leaving the fences up will count for something.

oooo maestro if i'd known you were there we could have said hello!!

would have loved to see the new stallion, at least you'll know when you go PN you'll beat them!!! Where does he go next?

Lovely pic, well done.

Is that you riding?

Im taking my two to Eridge at the end f the month for the 5yr old class, be interesting to see what the marks are like as they are like chalk and cheese!! One is a 3/4 warmblood 16.1hh bay mare. And the other is a 17.3hh (ish!) very leggy gelding, who looks like a race horse at the mo! Needs so much more weight on him.

That jump looks much bigger then when I did the 4yr old class a couple of years ago @ MK

Hoping thats the case at Bramham too - Ian Stark is doing the jumpign so at least we know he can jump!!

Who was the conformation judge today?

Doesnt she look all grown up

Ark at the end of the day as long as she produces the goods next season who cares what the judges think now!

Shes obviously got the brain and jump to have gone out there with very little competition experience and hold her own

Im at MK and know full well we will probably be laughed out of the ring, hey ho, as long as he does a nice dressage, and jumps well in both phases when he goes PN I will be very happy.

A MrS J Hubbard did the conformation and I not sure what she was looking for, the highest marked was nearly a heavyweight hunter (but not quite so fat)! Did the photographer have a website, we forgot to go and get a piccy.

Well done on a successfull debut. We went to spectate but the 4 year olds were done and dusted by the time we got there. Some quite spooky fences and a busy show so well done her.

It certainly helped to be riding a bay of 16.2 plus judging by the 5 year old results although a nice little chestnut slipped into 3rd. Sara Cohen won the 5 year old class as well.

Is that EC riding ??

Good luck at Bramham.

yes something like es photography, if that doesn't work let me know!!

The dressage judge bless her - i often wonder when i'm doing dressage marked by her if she can see to the other end of the arena, i mean she was doing it when my mum was my age!!!

Well done! William got a worse conformation mark than that and he's not doing too badly so far. Maestro - in teresting what you said about the highest confo mark, they used an old-school WH judge at MK last year, and she went for the hunter types. Ironicly I think the big-boned old-fashined type is less and less suited to modern courses

.

Is this the Mill Law mare? I thought he had a 100% bay record!

No she's by a TB stallion called Shipley Diamond. The mill law 3yo will have no probs - huge, bay, TB looking!!!

That's because it was John and Sue Rawding judging at MK last year, although Toni Brown won it on her little 16hh mare. That's where my boy qualified last year so I wasn't going to complain was I?

Anyway. it's interesting reading all your comments; I watched the final 10 of the 4yr olds and thought how different in type they all were.

I then had my boy in the 5yr olds and he was 2nd and qualified, and he's 17.1hh and middleweight (and bay, but definitely not boring!) As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and if I think he'll make a good event horse it shouldn't really matter to me what any BYEH judge says. This year I'm doing these classes for the mileage and experience (having qualified last year and being gutted when I was in the bottom 30% at the final!)

I'm certainly under no illusion that my freak is going to be in the final 10 at Burghley!

What a lovely photo - she looked really happy.
Surely judges can't be sizeist about eventers any more - look at Brit, Springalong, Springbok etc. They don't have to be 16.3 to be able to do the job. I would have picked her out for sure.

I know, I'm really chuffed with them both but particularly with Hector yesterday. I was so worried he'd have forgotten how to do it or lost his zest, but he was brill! Ross was lovely today - I was wetting myself seeing so many square oxers, one after another, but he was really good. Mind you, I'd have swapped him for the one that won - he was cracking and just my type.

Oh wow well done you thats a great result! Did look quite square for the 5yo's too.

Yes its EC Elle, she's my jockey at the mo although i'm going to ride her this afternoon!

She goes to Bramham on Friday, think we'll withdraw her from Stratford Hills, not liking the sound of it! So we'll go to Shipton Moyne and maybe Marchington BYEH.

Thanks, I thought it was a real eyeful so if yours jumped round just rolling one pole that's a really good result. At the end of the day it's the judges' opinion on what makes an event horse, and they all differ.

I'm at Bramham on Friday too - might have to have a bit of retail therapy once I've done my BYEH bit!

awww Sal she looks fab, think I've still got pics of her on my home pc from when she was a wee foal!

looks like Em has done a grand job with her

Well done everybody, I thought the standard of horse and presentation was brill in both the 4 and 5 year olds, just a shame that the judges cant acknowledge the effort put in for these classes by being more generous with marks. At the end of the day any one of them might be a superstar and are to their owners.

I couldn't agree more; any of the horses I saw could well end up at 4 star level, depending on how their training progresses over the years, but it's a long, slow process getting to that point. I do appreciate that the BYEH classes are used as a shop window and you can't blame producers for using them as such, but it's a shame when your more amateur producers don't get a look in or are disheartened by the judges marks.

Please can someone remind me of that when I'm at the final and upset because I don't come anywhere.

My OH and I will be at Bramham for the weekend, can't wait.
What's your horse's name in the BYEH (PM if you like) and I will try and have the camera ready.
