BYEH - is it possible...

Just thinking of doing a BYEH with my 5yr old, is it possible to do it without any help on the ground? Dont want to sound like a sad person but cant always guarentee that I'll have someone with me when I go competing

So do you have time after the jumping to go back to the lorry to strip them for the conformation judging, or is it like a showing class where they are stripped in the ring?

Hmm, it depends on the venue and how many enties there are. When we went to one you had hardly any time in between the jumping and the conformation as I was nearly last in the jumping and you go in altogether for conformation at first. So we left the ring and literally had to put our tack on the floor and a quick brush off and boots off. However, some of the people that went first had quite a while to get ready so it just depends when you are jumping. I would imagine it is different at every venue but you could ask to see if you could go early on in the jumping. This is usually saved for pro's or people with two horses though. We have watched one take palce at a county show before and their's took forever, there was certainly no rush, I guess it just depends on how many classes they have in the ring to how fast they move along.

At Bramham you did dresage straight into jumping the when finishe course you didnt leave the arean just took tack & boots off & trotted them up & down the side of the jumping arena towards the dressage & back whilst someone else was on with the other 2 phases!!

So did you manage to get the tack etc off yourself and dump it somewhere or did you have a helper?

I steward at Brockenhurst Park BYEH and I think you'd be fine without a helper at this event. You come out of the sj and go straight to the conformation judge but there were a number of people on their own that had left some brushes in a bucket by the judging area, plus had a few minutes to prepare as the judge usually had around another minute to go with the previous horse. So I guess as CentrestageSHS and k9h said it depends on the venue.

I'm thinking of Gatcombe or Hartbury, anyone know the format of these BYEH's?

I've done some on my own in the past and asked somebody hovering to hold my horse, just while I did the awkward bits like getting back boots off. People are very helpful, particularly if they see you struggling on your own....or maybe I just looked incredibly inept and they felt sorry for me!

I've not ever competed but have watched it at Gatcombe for the last couple of years and they come straight out of the jumping, take off tack and boots, maybe a quick brush down then trot up for the conformation judge, alot like k9h says Bramham works. IMO there's quite alot going on for the babies to look at at Gatcombe too.

I did both Gatcombe and Hartpury BYEH and you could manage on your own if you had to, or ask a onlooker to hold horse for you. Im sure you would be fine. Go for it!
