I don't quite know where to start with this

I do these classes as I think they're quite educational for young horses but a bit like last year, when you qualify and go there, do your stuff, it's a bit gutting to not have the judges agree with how talented/clever/shiny/cute you think your pony is.

So today Ross, aka the Humungahorse, went in, did his stuff ie. did a nice test, had the smallest fence down, wiped his back legs all over the bullfinch (despite having cleared it beautifully with his front ones), so why oh why was I disappointed to get 27 out of 35 for dressage, 25 out of 40 for jumping and 9 out of 15 for conformation?

Hey ho, I took it on the chin, put the big lump back in the lorry (only after he'd had half a packet of polos for being sooooo laid back about it all, or should that be toooo laid back about it all?) and went back to watch some of the others.

PF had gone straight after me and got 80-ish on Billy Landretti, and I wanted to see her on her other horse, also Jeanette Brakewell, Kitty Boggis, William F-P, Angela Tucker on Cotton King, Sarah Cohen etc. Well I saw stops, run-outs, falls, fence demolition, you name it, it happened! So I felt a lot better about my boy and how he'd gone in there, done what I asked - albeit with a "god how dull" face on - and not disgraced himself. So it's onwards and upwards to the PAVOs at Tweseldown in October.

Will post pictures in the gallery shortly. It was great to meet Tricksy and her OH and I would hope with his huge lens he got some good pics too!

Well done you - I think it is great that you went in and had a try as I wouldn't because I think it is so biased

Looking forward to the pics

What was your overall placing?

My advice for doing well is change your name by deed poll maybe something like Pippi Funell would be more successful! It says in the rules about the rider getting extra credit for being a top pro. Well done to your boy though sounds like he did not put a foot wrong and long term he will be very chilled about it all.
Did anybody famous cock up?

It was worth entering just for the passes: we got a free car pass, lorry pass and 6 people passes, and I am quite local so it's a bit of a day out.

I don't know what my overall placing was but I certainly wasn't last!

k9h is just putting the photos she took on photobucket......

PMSL! Piipi is a good name! Or what about Pippi Pop Pip sounds like fox pitt

Seriously , sounds like he was great-so how frustrating. I'd love to have watched it all to see who the best horses really were.

We had the conversation this evening about me putting a pro on for the final if I qualified again, but where's the fun in that? *stamps feet* It's my pony and I'm going to ride it!

Ross is v chilled about everything, but I did get the feeling today that it hadn't challenged him much, hence his "can't be a*sed to put much effort in" attitude.

Yes they did.

Aw, it is difficult when you're up against the big guns but don't be too despondent. Your chap sounds lovely and you should be very proud

Bad luck

whe your horse wins Badders they will all change there minds lol.
although that Billy Landretti has some record for a 5 year old, no jumping penalties on its record or a dressage mark in the 30's

Well that must be worth a fair bit in itself! Never mind about the result, obviously ring 2 at Burghley simply isn't good enough for him, he's conserving his effort for when he's in the main one. At least you know he must be pretty bomb-proof!

Yeah T_E, he's like a supermodel, doesn't get out of bed for anything less than Main Arena stuff!

I know the PAVO will be tough competition but I'm really looking forward to it.

At the end of the day it's a showing class, and to do well in them you have to have the right face..
As you've said just think of the free passes and keep kicking for the PAVO champs

i watched all the 5 yr olds the second year they ran it. the only one i liked, a seriously scopey horse which moved beautifully but was a bit fazed by things (only spooked a bit, didn't do anything dire) but was ridden by an amateur, came nowhere.. about 12th or something. all the pro's came top, some on, to my mind, far less impressive horses.
well done you for getting there, seriously. every time i breed one i think i'll aim for BYEH, and i've never even managed to get one to a qualifier yet!

Just to put another slant on things.. having re. read your report, you make him out to sound like a bit of a lumbering lump, and that's probably what the judges didn't like.. maybe they were looking for a bit more sparkle??

I thought he would light up a bit more when he went into the arena, but tbh I'm glad he was that laid back about it all, particularly when I saw how some of the others were behaving. I suppose I could have wound him before I went in, but 17.2 of big-boned, cheeky 5 year old carting me round the ring at Burghley would have been more disappointing than us not being higher placed!

A friend of mine also had a horse in the 5 year old classes and again he wasn't really liked by the judges but as she said it was an achievemnet to get there and she was looking at it as some of the country's best 5 year olds - so yours must be one of those to.

Don't be too disapointed. It is a tremendous achievement to get to the final when you consider how many horses entered the initial qualifiers. yes it can be subjective but you know he went well and it has been a good education. The PAVOs won't be so subjective.

You both looked fantastic and did so well, blinking heck you were at Burghley for goodness sake
shocked.gif
that is an enormous achievment in itself. Hubby did get some good pics, I'll put them up in the gallery for you either later on or tomorrow. It was great to meet you too and Ross is HUGE
shocked.gif
and very beautiful
grin.gif

Thanks everyone, Ross thinks he is gorgeous too. I'm not sure he knows how huge he is yet so please nobody tell him.
wink.gif

I'm not disappointed BBs, not now I've thought about it long and hard and put it all in perspective.
