C1 / B+E ??

I have C1 on my driving license, can I tow a trailer?

My passed my license after 1996/7 so I don’t automatically have B+E categories on my license.

I dont know about those numbers but if you have a normal car licence and passed after 1 jan 1997 you can't tow a trailer without a trailer test

you can tow it, if its under 3.5 tonnes (ie really lightweight trailer and really lightweight horse ) or if you display L plates and have a c1+b+e driver with you in the car.

if you passed after 97 you need to take a test!

I passed my C licence (HGV) in january and from what I can tell I cannot tow a trialer. Might be worth calling DVLA to confirm

you cant tow a trailer with a C license unless you have C+E

I'm afraid I don't know what the C1 entitles you to, but if you only have the B entitlement (not B+E), then you can tow a 3.5t vehicle + 750kg trailer OR a vehicle + trailer (>750kg) if;

- The trailer's Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) is less than the vehicle's kerbweight AND
- The trailer's MAM + the car's MAM (or gross weight) = less than 3.5t

This is very difficult to get around, but can be done with a single trailer and the right tow vehicle.

you only get B+E when you pass C+E

C1 does allow you to tow a trailer but only if the towing vehicle is a class C(over 3.5t) vehicle.

The unladen weight of the trailer cant exceed the laden weight of the trailer and the combined max gross doesnt exceed 7.5t.

so if you had something like a 5t sprinter van you could pull a horsebox no worries but not a 3.5t sprinter.

You may only tow a trailer that doesn't exceed 750kgs on your C1 licence or a combination that does'nt exceed 3.5tons on you Category B licence. Take the test its easy with proffesional advice.

The rules are stupid. I looked into it and you can't pull a trailer unless you have a +E part on your lisence. Doesn't matter that you're allowed to drive a lorry up to 7.5tonnes, you still can't pull a little horse box. It's riduculous.

You can either do your B+E test (to pull a small trailer like a horse box with a car), or your C1+E test (to drive a medium lorry with a middle sized trailer)

So now, depsite having spent a fortune doing your C1 test (costs £1000 up here for the training and test) you STILL need to go and do you B+E (or C1+E), at a further £500 for training and tests
