C1 Licence - Automatic

I am thinking of doing my c1 licence so I can get a 4.5tonne horsebox. However when I passed my car test a few years ago I passed it in an automatic meaning my licence is automatic.

Can I still do my c1 training and licence in an automatic or will I have to redo my car test in a manual (would prefer not to do this!)

Good question, In therory you could but only in an automatic lorry, best thing woud be for you to ring a heavy goods instructor and ask the question.

I’ve see companies advertise that all their training is done in auto lorries so they do exist!

I had a manual car licence but I did my C1 training and test in an automatic lorry.
It was SO much easier than dealing with 2 gearboxes on the other lorry I tried!

I do now have a manual C1 licence as oddly my manual car licence was enough to 'bump' me up but you can get an automatic C1 which would work for you.

Ring or speak to the DVLA or a Truck Training company.....nearly all commercial trucks on the road now are autos but there are some that have to be manual for the different jobs/loads they carry.

I would think you would need to do your manual car first but not sure.

my friend has four 12 tonne stone lorries. One is an automatic so yes they defo exist!!

Yes, auto lorries exist but it narrows your search for a suitable lorry.

Have you considered upgrading to a manual licence? You've got a couple of years of driving experience now so adding the gears in will be easy. It should make it easier to find somewhere who can train you for the C1 too.

I did my C1 with Tilston training in Wrexham and they were excellent. They can certainly advice on your options to remain on automatic, but they get people through all tests from car to HGV.
