I have just bought a lovely mare, absolutely gorgeous, she's coming on Friday

She's used to being ridden in a Bates close contact saddle, the saddle is not being sold with her and as funds are limited at the mo, I thought I would buy a Wintec close contact to get me started as I believe the saddles are pretty much the same apart from the Bates being leather and the price!

My question is, I was going to buy the Wintec cc with flock as there seems to be a fair bit of negativity about cair but her Bates cc is with cair so should I buy a Wintec cc with cair as that is what she's used to? Or won't it matter?

I've got a cair one & would choose the cheaper flocked next time.

The cair cant be adjusted, so my saddle is a little angled down due to Stan needing the wider headplate. No a problem if it were flocked as you could take a bit out of the back, BUT you cant with cair, so I'm stuck heading fractionally downhill.

Thats not cos of the flock or Cair, that is becuase the shape of the tree doesnt fit your horse. If anything if it tips you forward, it is because the back is still a medium and the front is wider.

To the OP, I would always go with flock after having a Bates Momentm saddle with Cair. I loved the saddle, but my horse didnt, and the only thing I could think of would be the cair.

I've got the Bates CC with Cair and love it, a good saddler can flock in behind the cair panels if any adjustment is necessary, which is what they did with mine. I can't see why the same couldn't be done with the wintec version!

I had the Wintec version a few years before I got the Bates and although my friend used to call it my bin lid, I got on very well with it!! Not sure that needed adjusting as it was on a different horse and fitted her well off the shelf!!

Good luck with your new horse!!

I hunted high and low for a second hand flocked version as I didn't want cair. It was amazing the amount of sellers of them on ebay didn't know whether theirs was cair or flock, I took a chance on a cheap one in a moment of madness and thankfully it worked out and was flocked.
Admittedly I haven't had any bad experiences with cair, but I consulted my saddler and as I was buying blind(i.e off ebay) I wanted as many adjustment possibility's as I could and cair couldn't give me that.
