... Grandpa wants a puppy to keep the Sprocker company.

Any information we need to know? We've looked around on t'internet for local breeders/sellers but nothing useful came up, so we're looking in local pet shops etc and general word of mouth.

Any hints or tips or general info about this breed?

Hi there!

We have a lovely cairn called Archie. He's about 12 now but has been a model citizen most of the time! We love him to bits!

Only downside is he can be a bit stubborn with my mum!! (ie if he's found an interesting something to sniff it can be a struggle getting him to leave it and come back). I have heard this said about Cairn's from other owners - they will do anything you want (as long as they want to do it too!).

I don't think they're very "trainable" if you want a dog to bring a ball back to you, do tricks etc but as a companion I doubt they can be beaten. Ours has a wonderful temprament. LOVES children and people and all other dogs (except labradors??? no idea why!), and is a constant source of amusement!!

We got him (12 years ago) from a breeder nearby, but we're up in Yorkshire so it might be a bit far for you and don't know if they are still breeding cairns etc. Sorry I can't be more help on how to source one, but highly recommend them if you're able to find one!!

Thank you very much for the information - we are hoping it will make our current sprocker shoulder some responsibility; he is a brilliant dog, but he can be immature and silly at times, but when he is with younger dogs he seems to grow up a lot and we are hoping that with a new pup we can make that permanant, and he gets quite lonely as well (at least, these are my Grandpa's reasons. The tenants got some lab puppies and he's all broody for a baby dog again!)

We don't want anything for tricks or showing, just something that will be smart and sensible, and little! Thanks again for the information, I'll pass it on.

Slightly off topic I'm afraid but our neighbours bought a pedigree Cairn but became worried by the size of his ears as he grew and asked us to have a look at him. We suggested that they contact the breeder who admitted that they also had a pet GSD that must have got to the Cairn while she was in season
