Poor old chap was very lame on the near hind beginning of January - came in from the field and next day had emergency vet. No heat, swelling or anything obvious but he was in a lot of pain. Given pain injection and put on bute and rested as much as possible. Had some HA injections in the vein to help joints - Jan's bill was £780. Chancer is the culprit - got the old man too play too hard too often.
After 4 weeks had physio for his hip - leg is now swollen round the tendon,but vet had said the swelling was windgall 2 weeks before and was not that worried. Physio said get vet out again as he thought there was more too it.
Cairo has had a tendon tap, (no infection) nerve blocks - nothing in foot and fetlock and x rays - another £480. What has happened is a piece of bone has come away where the ligaments attach - so some ligament is not attached. This explains the twisting action in the foot. The bone came away some time ago and is settling itself. The swollen tendon is secondary.
Vet said to scan tendon - another £300 is probably waste of time as even if there is damage, he cannot have complete box rest - too old and his joints need to be kept mobile. Really nothing they can do but keep him on danilon and let him have as much rest as he can.
His riding days apart from maybe a little walk in time are over.
He and Chancer are only allowed to groom under supervision in the school (they really miss each other) and are in their own half of their field until at least May when they go on to summer fields then will have to see.
He seems happy to walk round, but does rest the leg often. He is eating and happy enough - but he is a tough old horse that doesn't show pain unless it is very bad.
So - big hugs for him please and has anyone had this sort of injury - all we want is for him to be comfortable and able to have little walks which he really enjoys.
